BMX - is 34 pounds to heavy??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. i have a dk step up and its 34 pounds. is that to heavy to be doing anything? because im used to a 30 pound bike and when i got the step up i sucked because it feels so heavy. so does anyone have a heavier bike than 34 pounds and can still do good on it???
as far as i have seen, its possible to bust insane stuff on pretty much anything. for me, 34 would be a little on the heavy side, but i have a friend who swears blind his bike is 36 or above(i cant really remember), and he can still do soe stuff on it. it pretty much just depends on the rider.

how about this...
go ride your bike and try tricks on it instead of asking strangers on the internet if it's too heavy.

34 pounds is not at all heavy. I used to ride a bike that weighed more than 45 pounds, and I never complained about it. Just ride your damn bike.
i was playing step-up and this kid was complaining that his bike was too heavy and couldnt clear it, yea i cleared it on his bike.
it doesnt matter, you can still do whatever you want on a heavy bike.

You should look into carbon fiber headset spacers.

$15 each, and you save 3 grams. Well worth the money.

so are bmx frames all made of steal? my mtb barely busted 20 stock, so for a bike with no suspension, 20" tires, and is the same size as a kids bike, why do they weigh so much?

I just love posting photos of my sub 40 pound bike...

I think the weight does not matter too much, depending on your strengh. The heavier the bike the harder you have to pull to get it up in the air. Im quite skinny and find it hard to lift my 34 pound haro 540 up as high as I want, so Im doing loads of pushups and sit ups to get stronger :)
Also I have a MTB jump bike thats much lighter due to being alu. I cant bunny hop it as high as the bmx , im guessing due to its size!

You're my hero. CF headset spacers are so 1337

34 pounds is not heavy, just ask Expatariate about Moto Mags :-)

They really lighten up the front end a lot too.

I bet. Also makes manuals that much easier. On the tandem, I mean. You know, like on the back wheel. On a tandem. Like, with two people on it. At once.
*head pops in a burst of confetti*
There was a kid on here insisting that he saw a video of a guy doing wheelies on a tandem. I've seen the clip, and it was actually nose wheelies in San Franciso. There's a link to it around here somewhere.

Interesting looking bike. Are those 8 inch rotors?

No, they're 203mm Shimano XTs. (Same thing) We had custom Ti ones to match the rest of the bike, but they sucked. In the attached photo, you can see the scoring and chatter marks. The lasted about 220km.
Here's the link I mentioned: http://whnz.lostillusionsxxx.com/bf2.mpg

i'm totally going to put these parts on my new Cielencki frame:
FSA SLK MegaEXO carbon crankset (compact 110BCD w/single 34T ring)
USE Alien Carbon Seatpost
Selle Italia SLR Carbino saddle
CF headset spacers, natch.
Look Keo pedals (clipless for the mad bunnyhop skills, dawg!)
Wipperman Ti chain
Answer carbon forks (the custom ones made for Dahon folding bikes)
Rolf Prima vector 20" wheels (made for Dahon as well)
Zero Gravity brakes.
with those parts, how could i possibly suck? i mean, i'd be bunnyhopping over trees with that kit!

Watch out bunnyhopping with clipless pedals. I'm sort of also in the fixed gear community and those guys sometimes ride clipless, but I run old-style toe clips 'cause the danger of popping out is pretty high if you throw it into a skid or try to bunnyhop it.
Carbon cranks for BMX? Don't forget they're ruined the first time you lay the bike down.

skidding on a fix in clipless won't make you pop out. i run toe clips too.
and as far as ruining the carbon cranks.... DUDE!!! no way! they've got mega EXO bottom bracket technology! the bearings are on the outside!!! how could that ever fail!?
i'm gonna do pedal grinds all day long!
....on my look keos...and CF cranks.

That's 1/3 of the Rice Crispies trio. You'll just need Crackle and Pop now.

I've seen it happen, especially with cheaper pedals that offer less float. The guys at the velodrome down in San Jose get Speedplays (lots of float) and crank the release down like ALL THE WAY. Even still, I've heard of the occasional ejection and horrendous, inevtiable crashes.

You missed the point. External BB is *fine*, carbon for crank arms is not. If the arms are scratched, impacted or damaged in any way they become weak and snap. If you desperately want external BB get some cold forged XC cranks for mountain bikes.

i rode time ATACs for a long time and only popped out once when i was skidding around a corner and had my foot twisted a bit. plus my cleats were/are a bit worn. i've been using the same ones for a solid 3 years now, but the last 2 have been on the roadie. i've also had my foot slip out of my toe clips in a skid, but i've never crashed because of it. i could see accidental unclipping causing accidents more while sprinting and having your back foot pull out while you're pulling up from behind, rather than while skidding and having your front foot pull out.
i didn't miss the point. i think maybe i need to use some sort of special symbol for when i'm being sarcastic.
i was poking a little fun at weight weenies in general, and some of the marketing garbage that companies like to throw out there.
Expatriate: CF does kinda crackle a little bit right before it snaps. i over-torqued a specialized CF stem a few weeks ago (8.5Nm for the steerer tube does not mean 8.5Nm for the stem clamp bolts). and the pop comes in with those rolf vector 20" wheels something like 20 spokes in the rear and 18 in the front...stupidly low sopke count any way you slice it. in reality, i run primo powerbite cranks, a T-1 fork, primo pedals, and a set of nice 36 hole high flange, double walled wheels. i save the CF for the showroom floor at work.
edit: P.S. putting a euro BB on a BMX is utterly stupid. yes, my kink has one, but putting threads on that part of a BMX frame make absolutely no sense, especially when you consider that most of the BMX riders are kids who don't know the difference between a pedal wrench and a cone wrench, or the left pedal from the right pedal...not to mention using tiny-ass bearings that will wear out faster, and/or pit the hell out of cartridges...and don't get me started on the companies using WRENCH FLATS instead of the shimano splined BB tool...it's not like it would cost them that much more money to license the tooling to make it that much easier for a person to install their stupid threaded bottom bracket cups...

You should get a special symbol, because I'm so attuned to moronery here I might totally miss it. :D
CF is great on road bikes. I rode a 15lb Giant TCR Advance and had an instant orgasm.
Sloth, the only CF we have on our tandem is the headset spacers. They lighten up the front end a lot, and that's the only place I'm comfortable using plastic. Although I did have the Selle Italia with CF rails.
