I'm sure most of you know the feeling of standing up and then feeling like you're going to black out. This has been happening to me alot lately, the blackness is sometimes accompanied with a sickness in the stomach and slight headache...but doesn't last long. I just got back from swimming and noticed that it seems to be worse today. I'm pretty sure that it is associated with low blood sugar, atleast that's what i'm always told. I train often...i try to put in around 200 miles a week along with swimming and upper body weight training. I try to get most of my sugars in fruit. What are some other healty ways of getting my sugar up so i don't collapse.

FOR GOD'S SAKE GO SEE A DOCTOR, IT COULD BE ANYTHING.

Blacking out could be a result of many things, not just low blood sugar.

Actually the dizziness is from a drop in your blood pressure. If it was low blood sugar, the dizziness feeling would not go away until you have eaten enough food. Healthy ways of eating? Try eating more food, really, eat more quality foods in a balanced manner and that will stabilize your blood sugars.

Start by keeping track of your weight with a good set of scales and the use the same scales for consistency. Weigh before and after rides/ swim workouts to get an idea what your fluid shifts are, especially important in the summer. Weight drops of more than 2-3% of your total weight suggest dehydration. BP is easily measured with $20-40 instruments, dirt cheap from a bike equipment point of view. Check you BP and pulse rate sitting and standing up when having a spell. BP drops of more than 15-20mmHg when going from sitting to standing, especially with pulse rate changes of 20 or more beats per minute suggest dehydration as the source. If you pulse goes up 5-10beats/min max and BP doesn't change much then you are not likely to be dehydrated. This is not an infallible discriminator but very suggestive. Assumption: no meds that influence BP or heart rate on board. (I once weighed my under shirt, LS poly shirt and jersey before and after a cool weather ride (upper 40sF) when I wore full sleeve wind proof jackets and found 14oz of sweat in the clothes after the ride. I switched to vests to improve ventilation.) Steve
