I tipped my hat of to Virenque and his great ride.

Many think Lance put in an awesome ride. WRONG!

Richard was out nearly all day - 200+ kms. Not to mention a fast average speed and held off all the field to the base of the great 20_kms Mt. Ventoux and won on the top. Holding the group for over 200kms. before the climb and holding the group after a 20+km. climb. Simply incredible.

Hi,

Its true that Virenque put in an awesome ride but look at the last hour of the race. (and when you look at how the group on the climb with Lance did: Basso, Velo Mancebo, and Rumsas, that was pretty amazing too.)

The peleton entered the 20k to go mark at the bottom of Mt. Ventoux with Virenque and the breakaway 7' 10" in front. Lance reduced that, going uphill on a 7.6% grade, to 2' 20".

I feel very tired just watching it ...

According to a Reuters article, Armstrong's time for the climb was 58 min. , the fastest time on record for the tour. He evidently surpassed Pantini's previous tour record by 53 sec.

on a road course...maybe...but back in '99 or '00 i think it was Jonathan Vaughters clocked 56 min in an individual time trial up ventoux in the dauphine libere

Vaughters probably didn't have that pesky 100+ mile warm-up before the climb.

What Lance did in beating Pantani's time was to drive a stake through the heart of the feud that began a couple years ago when he gave Pantani the win on Ventoux.

It was a remarkable ride for Virenque, especially in light of his efforts prior to reaching the climb. Personally, any rider that attempts an early, serious (as opposed to sponsorship visibility) breakaway and can make it stick earns my admiration. And there's nothing I hate worse than when they're reeled in and beaten in the final kilometers of the stage.
