What is the difference between a cassette and a regular wheel set?

cassette = internal drive, contained inside the hub
freewheel = external drive, threads onto the hub
The advantages of a cassette hub are lighter weight, stronger mechanism and the ability to run teeny tiny (9t) cogs in the rear. The disadvantages are $$$. In the immortal words of Keith Bontrager, "Strong, lightweight, inexpensive. Pick any two."

If you need to run smaller gearing. I see no real advantage for my BMX racing.

I used to snap the occasional freewheel, no problems yet with the cassette (especially if you get a 4-pawl which most of 'em are now).

Cassettes, from what I understand, also engage quicker than freewheels.

One of the cruisers I look at had a cassette hub. The guy was telling me how easy it was to change gearing. So I could come in last, spinning madly? Or come in last, turning too much gear? I'm happy when I get 4/5.

So...what he was trying to tell you is removing a freewheel with an ACS tool is a more arduous task than removing a lockring with a hook spanner? It's like those infomercials with the one guy who's TOTALLY STUPID and can't control his limbs vs. the guy with today's featured useless product who doesn't happen to have Parkinson's.

No, I'm saying that until I can increase my anaerobic threshold, gearing is the least of my concerns when it comes to racing. For myself, there's no benefit to a cassette hub. If my bike came with one, that would be great, but it wasn't a selling point for me. Oddly, I have 2 freewheels on my desk right now. Maybe they're old school comfort parts for me. Kind of like big skateboard wheels.

No no no, you misunderstood. I just thought it was funny this dude telling you changing cogs is quicker and easier than changing freewheels. 'Cause it's the same procedure. =)

regular hub-16T or higher gearing, drives on outside of hub
F/F hub(flip/flop)-two sides of threads one for regualr and one for the smaller freewheels (14T, 15T and 13T)
and as for what everyone is saying about how freewheel hubs and flip/flop hubs are no longer good...i still have my Odyssey F/F wheelset from about 2-3 years ago when Cassetes werent that popular and people bought Cassetes only for micro gearing capabilities, and now with the new freewheels i can go as low as 36-13 gearing with my "anceint" F/F wheels...right now i have a 39T S&M sprocket and a good old 14T ACS freewheel and they serve my fine...but i will admit i have blow out and broken my share of Freewheels but its not that big of a deal to me i mean a new freewheel is only what like...$16ish and a new cassete hub is $84ish so its worth it considering i have only blown out 4 or 5 freewheels...
