Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Boston/New York or Boston folks, CHINATOWN BUS QUESTIOn

Hi. I was in Boston a few weekends past transporting myself from New York via Lucky Star (one of those chinatown buses) and noticed a cluster, at least five plus (5+) bike punx (with fixes) in the boarding area of a chinatown bus, apparently waiting to board for New York.

I was wondering if anybody knew if any of the New York - Boston chinatown buses allowed bikes? If so, are are the mounted to the bow of the vessel? Are the stowed in the hold?

Greyhound doesn't charge and lets you go unboxed. Beware, though, Peter Pan has different rules and it's only unboxed if they have a completely open cargo bin. I almost got stuck hanging around the port authority terminal an extra two hours because this policy isn't made clear even if you call ahead. It's all very complicated and not especially interesting, though it ends with me in a shouting match with the bus dispatcher.

i never had any issues loading bikes onto any of the chinatown buses. they are awesome because they simply do not give a ****. when we went to boston for R1, we loaded up four bikes onto an already packed cargo area... i just moved other people's **** around to make room. then i high-fived the bus driver. yeah chinatown bus.

It all depends on who you ask, and who loads your stuff.

I've had Fung-wah and Luckystar drivers charge me extra for a bike, I've had them deny me, and I've had them let me throw it in with no questions asked.

Do you have to dismantle the bike to fit it in the cargo area? I figure you have to at least take off the wheels but do you need to take off the handlebars and the seatpost also?

Lucky Star never gives me a problem. I just put the bike, as is, in the cargo bin and then sit vigilantly by thw window to make sure nobody makes off with it before we depart.

Cool. I rode a chinese bus (apex, balto-nyc) last weekend. Next time I will try to bring my bike!

These buses are pretty chaotic, so I wouldn't 100% depend on whatever driver you get allowing it. However, even with a full bus, I noted there was still plenty of room in the cargo area. The people that ride this buses typically don't travel heavy.

Yeah, also, don't take too long at rest stops. I am pretty sure the last bus I took stranded two people in Delaware, despite pleas from other passengers to wait!

if they charge you extra, how much is "extra" usually? $5? $10?
