ahhh... I guess it's called mektronic shifting - a wireless shifting system by Mavic. Has anyone used this?

It eliminates the cable connection between shifter and derailleur. Test rode them at a bike show a few years ago: quick, smooth precise, but the left shifter only works on Dbl Chainrings which is why I don't have it on one of my bikes. All mine are triples.

Chewa, you're probably right because they are non-serviceable. They have to be returned to the factory. Dealers were encouraged to stock spares for replacement so the customer wouldn't be inconvenienced.
Still, I wouldn't mind setting up an all Mavic bike w/ Techtronic just for casual weekend cruises. Might even go tubeless tires.

yes, I have seen them, were introduce to the market like two years ago and and the price was like a $1,000.00 for a group, it runs on battery to activate the electronic sensor on the groupo..at that time, I was thinking on buying one, but gave up the idea, coz of servicing this thing.

I finally got a set up from a friend and I like it. I can run all my 7, 8, 9 and 10s wheels with no major problems.

My wife has this system on her bike and loves it! It is MEKTRONIC, not Techtronic BTW.
To clarify it's for the right shifter (rear) only, the front is still mechanical (cable). There are 3 positions in which you can shift at the press of a button. One at the tip of the brake lever, another the top of the hood, and the third at the computer.
She loves this over my Ultegra because she has VERY VERY VERY weak hands and had a difficult time shifting. Yes, even Dura-Ace level components.
We had some initial set-up idiosyncracies, but now that we've got it set-up, it's functioning great. The computer had to be almost level, the zip ties holding it couldn't be too tight or they pinched the wire, the wheel sensor was too low! (All my fault for not completely reading the manual - except the too tight zip ties!)
The rear jockey pulley acts as a generator and provides power to the system, there are 3 batteries, one at the computer, one at the front wheel sensor, and one at the rear derailleur. The system is very cool and works great!

A friend of mine from South Africa races
Tandems with his wife. They use the Mektronic
due to the problem with long cables on the
tandem. Said they've never had any problem
with it although there were some documented
failures from the early production runs.
Don't know if Mavic is still making them but
you see them on e-bay alot.

shifting mechanism, which can be read about
on the CAMPY ONLY rumors page.
