Are they the same thing? I always thought spandex was that material that the flashdance chicks wore back in the 80's, and lycra was the new thing.

Same thing. Spandex is the generic name, Lycra is DuPont's brand name for it.

Lycra, the thing cyclist wear, spandex, the cheezy name that people give to clothing cyclist wear...
It is all the same thing, I just like the sound of "lycra" better...
