I'm using Shimano v-brakes, and I just bought new rims. When I apply the brakes they make a scraping sound against the rims, just like with the old rims. My brake pads aren't that worn out yet, and the guy at the LBS said there might be sand sticking to the pads, although I've tried wiping them with a wet cloth. Is that right? Should I just get new pads? The braking surface on my old rims had parts that were worn out pretty bad. Please help.
If it bothers you that much spring for a new set of pads, sheesh!

Yup, I just did. And I just wanted to know what caused that scraping sound, so I can prevent that from happening...
Everything from road debris to tiny slivers of your rims embeds itself into your pad surfaces. Most people recommend occasionally going over the brake pad with fine sandpaper from time to time. Use some sandpaper and go over it EVENLY and square to it, then wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol real quick. That should do it..
