Ok, we have only ~100 miles on our new C'Dale, so I'm still a noobie, but it seems I'm working harder muscle wise but my heart rate is lower than normal. Why, I ask Why? Just doesn't make sense.

Dunno. When I work hard, my HR goes up. Perhaps you are relying too much on the partner. Go find a hill and see if it is still the same.

Muscle problem: Perhaps the pilot's positioning is a bit off from what you are used to riding. Seat too high/low? Saddle too far back/forward? Height/reach to handlebars? Pulling/not pulling on the bars? Using a bit different muscles.
Lower HR: stoker working harder than you?
Just a 'possible' long distance diagnosis!

Could be because you sit a lot more on a tandem, and thus find yourself spinning a bit higher candence to climb than on a single, when you might be inclined to stand and ride a taller gear.

Or, sometimes you get caught in the wrong chainring and end up mashing too tall a gear seated. That can make you sore!

Perhaps you (like me) are asked to spin slower than you normally would, and your muscles neet to adjust?
