BMX - tire sizes

1. how are they measured? (width or height, diameter or what)
2. what difference does it make?
3. whats the best tire for street and trails?
4. what tread should i look for?

its measured the size of the tread. 1.95 has a smaller tread than 2.25. Maxxis makes a great tire, also Primo. Primo The Wall is a great street tire, or Maxxis M Tread. Dirt, Maxxis Holy Rollers, or Hookworms. Danscomp.com has great stuff.

For street/trails ridign you should run a wide dirt tire up front and a skinny street tire in rear. I personally run the DEmolition trail slayer 2.10 and I love it. In the rear you should run a narrow street tire, I was rrunning a Kenda kikzumbut 1.95 now im running a Kenda Kontact 1.95

Kenda is not very high end stuff. It is cheap at Dans like $4 a tire. I just whatever you want to spend.

Tire sizes have 2 parts - the first part is the diameter of the rim it is designed to fit on. Since we (mostly) are all riding 20" bmx bikes with 20" rims, we look for tires that have 20x(second number) on them. 24" and 26" rims will have tires that start with the numbers 24 and 26 respectively.

The next number is what should be the fully inflated diameter of the actual tire. So, a 20x1.75 tire should be 1.75 inches across and fit a 20" rim. A tire like a 20x2.10 tire will be about .35 inches wider than the 20x1.75 tire. It is all personal preference but tread plays into you type of riding and durability and pressure handling does as well.

Big love for Primo Walls from me though for flatland and by a lot of park/street riders.

a wider tire up front helps on your control especially in dirt...but also on the street...in the back just go with a skinnier tire..like 1.95 or even 1.85...doesn't really matter all that much...;just make sure you get smaller treads in the back or on the road will not be good....people will hear your bike form a mile away..

i ordered a Primo Dirt Monster or VMonster up front in a 2.1 or 2.2 and a Primo Wall at the back in a 1.85. will be here tomo. gonna be schweeet!

for street the best tire setup going is the .... Primo Commet in the back (2.1) and the Wall or V-Monster in the Front (2.2 or 2.1)
for trails the best is... Primo Dirt Monster in the front (2.2) and v-monster in the back (1.95)
bigger tires...are widder and supposedly give you better balance and stability and smaller tires have less rolling resistance making you faster...


speaking of tires...are those FLY Reuben tires any good..i know there HUGE...

Maxxis makes kick ASS tires...i have right now...a holy roller (2.2) in the front and a holly roller (1.95) in the back


BEST DIRT TIRES EVER...no matter if your trails are wet, dry, crumbling or perfect...

i am replacing my maxxis hookworms with what i described above. they wear too quick.

well at least my Maxxis tires have all kick ass...i have had the Holy Rollers and the Max Daddys...and both of those tires for about 2-3 years...i just replacing them everyonce in a while...but i never have trouble with them wearing down too fast...

I have been looking at the Duro Fantasy tires. They are $9.99 per tire at Dan's. I am thinking about getting 2.10'' in front and 1.95'' in back.
