Haven't read it yet, but hidden amongst all the Lance in the August issue is a story about "worlds colliding" - they outfitted an experienced minimalist/speed tourer with a complete set of stuff he usually doesn't carry and a comfort tourer with a minimal set of speedy stuff, and sent them on a bike tour in California together.
If you don't normally buy it, you might want to have a read.

READ IT AND LOVED IT!!!!
'Specilly as I thought long and hard about which of those two ways to tour to California, from Colorado, AND I have lived in Mill Valley and Healdsburg, the start and finishing points, AND worked at one of the wineries they featured in the article!!! I thought the article was written for me!
Way fun.
And informative.

Though I have yet to go on my first tour, I like to read about touring for the day I am ready to go. I was considering a Yak until I read about the PIG  - on second thought...

I think someplace in the middle of the two would be the way to go. I have the bike, just need to get the equipment and the balls to head out on the road on a bike.

When I was vacationing in Northern (lower) Michigan in June, I saw two separate guys doing bike touring. Both were pretty loaded but neither had a PIG.

The article makes it sound so simple, I'm ready to rush out and get some stuff and try a long weekend.
