Road Cycling - What bike should I get for my budget?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have $4000, I am looking at the Cannondale's bikes (like the team bikes which are probably a bit over that budget), any other brands you peeps suggest I look at?thank you in advance!:)

I rode a Cannondale for several years and I loved it, so please don't think that this is a slam. You can get a better bike for 4,000 than a Cannondale. What type of riding are you going to do? How big are you? Are you competitive or do you want do distances? Hills? Are you a sprinter? Centuries? Doubles (animal!)? Touring?
I have a Cinelli. It makes me climb. It listens to the voices in my head that say,"jump out of the seat and shred this hill". What do the voices in your head say?

Litespeed Vortex + Campy Record...eer..no

$4000 cdn won't cover that I think heh :D

Seriously though, $4000 is a significant amount of money (for some of us at least - especially me the poor student) so I think you should do a LOT of research and narrowing down based on your interests/intentions etc before you do anything! :D

Good luck.

Beefcake.....

I recently bought an Airborne Zeppelin - Ultegra components. The adage about spending more gets you less is true. The difference between a $500 bike and $1000 bike is HUGE. The difference between a $2200 bike (like mine) and a $4000 bike is not so great.

For $2000 to $2500 you can get a fabulous bike.....so look first in that category......then throw a big party.....or buy another bike.....or get married....or get divorced.....or send $1500 to me via PayPal and I will figure out something to do with it.

In the meantime visit Airborne at http://www.airborne.net . You can configure the bike you want online.....and drooling is permitted.

Nice to have the money and I think seeking advice of bikes to look at is a very good idea.

Go to a good LBS,
Get a proper fitting if your gonna spend that kind
of scratch. Then look at Serotta, Seven,
Litespeed etc. At the $4k range you should be looking
at custom fit.
Also check out Rivendell, Sachs etc.
Serotta has some closeouts on their website
very good prices for exceptional frames.

From what I can tell, the returns in terms of performance and quality really begin to diminish when spending more than $2,500 to $2,700. I'm looking myself and have recently come to this conlcusion. Do you folks agree?

By the way, he's talking about Canadian Dollars which are worth about 62 cents. His C$4,000 is worth about $2,500. Would any of your answers change if his question was "I've got $2,500, what bike should I get"

for $ 2,500 US...right now...(personal preference)...I would buy

Ti: Airborne Zeppelin
Al: Colnago Dream Plus
Steel: Colnago Master X Light, Seven Cycles Axiom, or Ind. Fab. Crown Jewel.

If I had $4K to spend on cycling, I think I'd end up with 4 bikes.

I beg to differ with this thought.
For $2.5k and up you are in the realm of custom builders,
custom fit, small operations that really define what quality
and performance is in a frame (not to say that less than $2.5k
is not quality). You begin to hear Rivendell, Serotta, Kellogg (Spectrum) etc.
For a cool 4K you can talk about the zenith
in North American frames, that would be Richard Sachs.
I have no idea what an Eisentraut would run but you can't
get any better, he taught them all.
$2.5 would also be in line for litespeed, they were ridden
by team Lotto in TdF this year, I would guess they kinda
stress performance
