Just finished reading Miles From Nowhere written by Barbara Savage. It is about a woman an dher husband who in the late '70's did a 2 year round the world bike tour. One of the places they loved the best was New Zealand.

In the chapter about their visit in New Zealand she constantly mentions the great hospitality in both the North and South islands. People were always inviting them to stay at their house, feeding them, etc. Almost to the point of smoothering them with affection. And to the point where Barb and her husband had to turn down a lot of the kind hospitality because they were running out of time on their trip.

Keep in mind this happened back in the late '70's to early '80's. Is the hopitality still like that today, over 20 years later? If a American takes a bike tour through New Zealand will be as welcomed as Barbara and her husband were? And can expect to have the the people there shower them with the sam ekind of hospitality? Or has things changed in that regard? If things have changed, why? What happened?

I lived and worked on the south island from 1988 to 1991 and can tell you during that time the hospitality was as you described. Havent been back since out contract work

I actually met the Savages in New Zealand in 1980 in Tongariro.
They were finishing up their bike trip and I was travelling around NZ by plane, bus, boat and thumb.(No bike)
I remember sitting eating ice cream and listening to their adventiures- it inspired me to take a bicycle on my next trip. Such friendly, enthusiastic people.
larry said that two things he really missed about the US were good Mexican food and the L.A. Smog.
