Last Saturday was the Pedal to Presque Isle ride. It's 70 flat to rolling miles. At the start of the ride I notice a guy on a fixed and figure that would be the last time I saw him during the ride. As a fixed gear rider myself I wanted to check out his rig so I pulled up next to him and started to chat. He was running 46X16 on a Surley frame with a flip flop and a front brake. The guy was a rugby player from Erie, PA (5' 10" 250lbs). I was on my road bike so I figured I would ride away and find a fast group to ride with. Turns out the guy on the fixed stays with our group for the whole ride and took his turns at pulling at 22-23 mph. On one downhill portion he was spinning so fast one of the wrenches in his pocket flew out so he had to turn around to pick it up off the road. He caught back up with the group within 5 mi.
Ride data:
70 miles
Avg 19mph
Max 38.5mph
3h:36min
I was impressed enough to consider doing next years ride on one of my fixed.

Enjoy

Lol rugby players.
I play(ed) rugby too. The all out mentality of riding fixed esp. on hills and skidding is similar to the vibe during a rugby game. I'll bet he used to wrestle too.

Nice. I played hooker, scrum-half, and wing at University and men's league.

Corvallis BB? Do(did) you go to Oregon State?
