Had one of his front fenders for 4 years no issues. I did crack my THE rear fender, but to be fair I slid into a tree at 25km/h at -15C. Not ideal operating conditions for plastic.

The thicker fenders made of more fibrous plastic are probably more durable, but they are also heavier, for those who worry about such things.

Not sure what a downhill looking fender is but I got the Topeak Defender based on Raiyn's recommendation and love the set. Here's a pic. Click on the picture to hit the Topeak link:

Guess what else I did? I have reflective tape on every 3rd or 4th spoke pair on my rims. I'll probably post a pic on the commuter sub-forum when I have a chance.

Then you'll like my next step. I've discovered reflective spray paint (made by Krylon and Rustoleum). It's a semi transparent paint that I plan on experimenting with it over the weekend on a section of painted steel to see how it looks. If it's successfull I'll be using it instead of some of the reflective tape currently on my commuter. I'll be trying single vs. multiple coats on prepared (wet sanded with 400 grit) and unprepared surfaces. If I'm really feeling cocky I'll even try my hand at masking out some small designs.
I'm doing this largely because it's obvious that reflective surfaces are a good thing, but having bright orange reflective tape all over the frame can look well DORKY.

So I've put the initial coats of Rustoleum's Reflective spray paint on my test piece tonight. So far I have 4 good coats on it and I'm starting to see a bit of reflectivity on the black painted steel used for the test. Of course I will need to wait for the paint to dry completely before I can have an accurate idea of how well it works.

I wanted to see what the actual paint would do with no help from the background material
My commuter is black and I wanted to go for more of a "stealth" look during the day with the benefits of a reflective surface at night.

If you need stealth reflective tape, the eBay seller I bought my reflective tape from sells a black one. I bought the silve rone as it's rated as a higher reflector but I'm sure the black one would work fine:
