Nancy and I are 3 days into our tour from Vermont to Bar Harbor and back again. Currently staying the night in Fairlee Vermont after a brief ride across the river in NH. Tomorrow we should be pressing on to North Woodstock or Lincoln NH where we may take a rest day. There's some bad weather possibly blowing in and we had enough rain on Saturday when we were drowning in it for about 3 hours. That's the way it goes. We had to get some miles in.
Our first nights stop after starting late in Burlington was Middlebury. We were faught over by three couples in a sports store after walked in and asked where there would be a good place to stay. We had a blast visiting with our hosts in their fantastic classic Vermonter's home and then they made breafast for us before we headed off for Middlebury pass.
The ride over Middlebury Gap was steep in places. We're from mountain country so when I say steep...I'm saying it's on the above average side. We've seen several grades of at least 15% in the past couple of days.
We stayed in Bethel last night and are only looking to do about 40 miles a day in the mountains so we have plenty of time to look around and find a place to eat. My bike is around 100 pounds with the gear and I haven't had trouble climbing anything but will be welcoming a day off after tomorrow because it's the smart thing for muscle recovery.
Today we made it into New Hampshire but when we didn't find a resonable nightly rate we headed a mile over across the river back into VT and for a room. We'll be hoteling it and eating out for the most part until we get over Kancamagus Pass. Then it's camping and cooking with our MSR stove.
We're having a great time though I'm not used to this warm and humid weather. I can do hot and dry better but I deserve a little pain. I came into this tour 10-15 pounds heavy and in couch potato status. ;)
Vermont was great and we'll be seeing it again come August.
Once Crazyguy gets back up then our Burlington to Bar Harbor and Back journal will pop up to the top of the "What's New" listing once a week or so.
`til then I'll try to post something here if anyone is interested.
Cheers,
Ron & Nancy
