I am going on a 3 week tour in October. I appreciate the need for added energy when approaching hills and find that Gu works just fine, but man, I hate the stuff. What do you all eat, on the bike, other than power bars and the dreaded Gu?
Thanks!

Try Lara Bars. Also, try some of the other brands of gels.

Go to cranksports.com and order eGel, much tastier than Gu, and more electrolytes

I appreciate the convenience of gels(fan of the Cytomax and Hammer gels) but the few times I have toured I have packed away real food and eat frequently while I go. Usually a zip-bag with nuts/dehydrated fruits stuffed away in the jersey. For protein I keep a cheeseburger in the bar bag. Wait, no, I don't do that.

As far as bars go, I like cliffbars. I carried PowerBars on a hiking tour of Ireland years ago, haven't been able to eat one since. I'll carry a straight up candy bar for the quick sugar fix.

I like CarBoom best, the Vanilla Orange is kinda like frosting, and easier for me to get down anyway. I did NOT like Gu. Try other kinds.

Second vote for Carb Boom. I like the Apple Cinamon best, it's like the filling to a Hostess apple pie. I also use the Vanilla Orange, but not as much, it has caffeine, so I use first thing in the morning and when I start to drag. I found that buying the big bottles and using the plastic flasks works great. No messy wrapples to fiddle with and you can take a smaller or bigger shot if you like. For bars, I stick with Cliff Bars.

Carb boom goes down real easy and is really nice. Otherwise, you can just get a gel flask and fill it with honey. That works well too when you need a boost, like say for a several mile long hill that you know's 10 min ahead.
Otherwise, just pack dried fruit with you and eat on the go. If you eat regularly, you won't need the added boost. Acceleragel supposedly works better cause it's got a little protein in it too. I wouldn't rely on the stuff but it's always nice to have on hand if you need it.

fresh/dried fruits, crackers(saltines are my favorites), gels, protein/energy bars.

I like hammergel pretty good, it tastes good and goes down easy without drying your mouth out too bad.
