i am not sure i want to be cliped into my bike, i dont see any really drastic improvements from platform to clipless. and i know most people in mountain biking use clipless, but dont really want to be one of them. so, there isnt any difference from bmx platforms and mtb platforms is there?

Other than axle size? No. MTB's and Roadies use a 9/16" axle and many BMX pedals are 1/2" Get the 9/16" and you'll be fine

Platforms can vary a lot. I usually ride Time ATAC Z's for clipless but I only like clipless for long, generally non-technical rides.

I do most of my riding with Wellgo WAM B67's because I don't care to walk around in bike shoes every time I go riding and I don't like the sketchy feeling of being unclipped on clipless pedals when things get dicey. The B67's have huge platforms that I can torque like crazy when I need to apply the power but they are thin so they don't bang the sides in rutted trails and on surface rocks. The pins on 'em grip like crazy; sometimes I think I'm clipped in. I love those pedals!
