Triathlon - Advice to keep from spewing during my run...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It seems that no matter how light I go, or how much warmup I do, My first 1/2 mile I am going to come close to puking. I will gag right up to the point of hurling, and then all the saliva generated from nearly throwing up seems to coat my mouth and throat and I'm ok after that, regardless of how dry I end up.

Any ideas? I know I'm adequately hydrated and warmed up.

Sheesh, this thread is gross...sorry about that! :)

Is this for running only or during a brick workout?

What did you eat prior and how long before your run?

if this is off the bike, you may be OVERLY hydrated. or you may be overconcentrating your drinks. try to cap the calorie count at 200-250calories per bottle so your tummy absorbs as fluid. when your tummy treats the drink as food it just sits there. try swapping whatever gel you use for something easier on the tummy. i prefer GU and in races have had substantial trouble holding down PowerGel and Carboom (ugh, esp Carboom -that was a disaster)

i've come to accept that i will cramp in the first mile off the bike. in time, i've just trained myself to run through it.

oh yeah, a good burp some times does wonders. yep, this thread is gross

Nothing like a good burp out on the run :)

I'm not doing bricks - I'm not that advanced yet :) I'm just doing plain 3 mile run/walks at the moment. My tri season is over since it's 100* here. I'll start up again in the fall, and am mostly just trying to stay in decent running form. when I run, it's at least two hours since I've eaten, so there's nothing in my stomach giving me fits.

I may try this on sunday(race in Toronto), the last 2 races I have felt horrible the whole run, and I have been using carboom. Never had a problem in training, mind you i never use gels on brik days......

-EDIT- tummy is telling me overhydrating

actually from experience I've found that the only real way to test a gel is on a brick. even better, during those horrible workouts with multiple bricks. For instance: (3 (6min hard bike 3 min hard run)). If it doesn't make you sick then, you are golden.

I tried to alternate Gu with powergel during a 1/2IM and will probably stick to Gu from now on. It definitely shut down my stomach.
