"A NINE-year-old boy was impaled on the handlebars of his bike in a horrific freak accident.

And in an amazing twist, police had to be called as emergency services were hampered by morbid passers-by taking pictures on their mobile phones."

I'm wondering if the brake lever was broken or otherwise sharpened.

I can't see how a brake lever could pierce the skin. Freak accident indeed!

The lever had pierced his leg quite close to his groin but had missed all vital organs.

Vital organs in the groin... um hum... ;)

The handle end of a fat butter knife will impale you if it hits you fast enough and hard enough. Easy to conceive it happening with the pressure of all his body weight against it on a fast fall.

When my son was just about that age he lost control of his bike and went down an embankment and impaled his thigh on the end of his handlebar, which had lost its plug. If you land on something hard enough, it will penetrate, as the "butter knife" poster pointed out. I remember that the doctor who sewed him up said he was going to go home and check the handlebars on his kids' bikes . . . .

Last year I saw a woman who had ridden too close to a fence, catch her bars, then get impaled in the inner thigh. Nice little round puch hole. My wife and I rode 5 miles to get help. I did get pictures, but I asked first. No release so dont ask.

On another note-- I had hear that a child got gored in her jugular from a high bar type bike. A doctor was right there, but there was nothing he could do.

You can still get impaled on a handlebar with a plug, but without a plug it is going in deeper and will do more damage. Make sure you have good, solid bar plugs.

Sick bastards. I used to think that there were two kinds of people in an emergency. Those that take action to help, and the great majority who for whatever reason take no action. But I guess there's a third kind... sad buggers who just want to get off on the spectacle, calous and oblivious to the harm they are causing.

When I was a kid I went down on my bike while jumping curbs. The handlebars spun around and gouged me in the side. Thirty five years later I still have the crescent shaped scar from the handlebar end (the grips had the ends worn off and had slid up the bars an inch or so). I guess I was lucky. If the handlebar end had hit harder it could have impaled me.

I got impaled in the chest when I fell while riding my hybrid... the handlebars just spun around as I fell and nearly knocked me out from the pain. I had a gouge in my chest for nearly 8 months or so... God, the pain!
