It's interesting that everybody keeps coming to the same conclusion that the a standard derailleur is in the wrong position. It's just too darn expensive to move it though ;-)

In one of the pics it looks like he has a nokian 3.0 gazzalodi with a studded 296 on each side. Thats' over the top, man.
