Bicycle Mechanics - Unknown squeak from rear.

Perhaps somebody can give me some insight into the following problem (I ride a Trek 1000 with about 1500km on it) :

Virtually everytime I switch gears in the rear, I hear a squeak coming from the rear of the bike. Shifting in the front is Okay. Every once in a while, while pedalling I hear a smaller squeak as well (this is more likely to happen while sprinting or climbing)

Any ideas of what this could be, or things that I could do to prevent it.

Try applying some lube to the pivots and the springs of the rear der. and see if that works.

What do the pivots look like? Just where the appartus bends?

Yes all points that the rear der. pivots on when you look in the body you should see rods that go from one point to another. Lube the above sections where the body contacts each other.

Thanks again Hunter, should I use the Teflon-Plus lubricant that I already have, or do I need to get some special stuff?

Also have a look at the derailleur jockey wheels, they might need lubrication.

If the squeak persists after the other items have been checked, it could be the cable is dry and squeaks when it's pulled through the cable guide on the underside of the bottom-bracket shell, or the little o-ring seals sometimes found in the ends of the cable housings. You can try a drop of lube where the cable goes into the housings or through the guide, if that's the case.

Yes a dry lube is ideal. One that sheds contaminates is a real good idea.

I did what Hunter suggested, putting lube on basically most of the joints and spring of the rear shifting mechanism. That made the squeak go awak for about 40km. Then it came back... Perhaps I did not put enough on or maybe in the wrong place? It seems as though I am right general area though...
