He hasn't worn it since the beginning of the race. It's because he is national champ of Kazakistan and those are the country colors.

If you're the current national champion, I believe you're obligated to wear your country's colours. It's the same thing with McEwan and his yellow/green Australian jersey.

Not obligated but allowed to. And most national champions do wear them. From what the OLN guys were saying early in the tour Vino has been wearing his country's colors against the wishes of T-Mobile.

National champion's jersey

1.3.068

National road, track, cyclo-cross, mountain bike, BMX, trials and indoor cycling
champions must wear their jersey in all events in the discipline, speciality and
category in which they won their title and no other event. In a six-day event,
only madison national champions must wear the jersey even if they are not
paired together.

Actually, T-Mobile's official team color is MAGENTA, not "pink." Sometimes Phil and Paul call it magenta, sometimes pink. Check out Giant's official site for the team.

I posted this earlier on another thread, still valid:

Multiple choice:
A: Its his girlfriends favorite color
B: It maches his eyes and he's a metrosexual guy concerned with stuff like that
C: Ullrich double-dog-dared him to!
D: That is the champion of Kazahkstan (sp) jersey that he won and is required to wear on all road stages.

What really confused me was trying to figure out what glasses he was wearing during today's stage (11). They looked really clear. Then I realized he had em on backwards...

I think the turquiose could be a bit darker to bring out the yellow better on his jersey though...

According to the official Kazakhstan information page (http://www.president.kz/main/mainframe.asp?lng=en), it's sky blue.

Also, not to criticize Paul and Phil, but they keep referring to Vino as Kazakh. Kazakhs are Asian and are ethnically related to the Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Mongols. With that blond hair and blue eyes, Vino is obviously European, probably ethnically Russian. It's a small point to us Westerners, but I lived in Kazakhstan for a time in the 90s and Central Asians are very sensitive to such ethnic/national designations. Just my two cents.

He's certainly got plenty of Euro-Russian in him, and I always assumed he was basically transplanted Russian, but now I think he might have some Asian background too- just look at the square of his face and his eyes. But we'd really have to ask him...

Just to preempt the usually inevitable question: that is why TT champions wear it only in the TTs, and Road champions wear it only in the road stages.

Unless they are Jan Kirsipuu, in which case he wears it in both, because he is both. :)

N.B. There are other dual winners, I just forget who.

This question should be a sticky because I've seen it about 10 times now.

Actually, you're all wrong.

Jeez.

He's a single guy, and he hasn't figured out that you don't wash your colors in hot water with your whites.
