I enjoy taking a day off from commuting 29 miles round trip on my bike. It gives me a chance to re-fire.

But when I'm driving to work, usually along the same route I cycle on, I get a strange feeling...

"Say, isn't this the same hill I usually ride my bike up?" I ask myself. "I'm up it already, but I feel like I haven't done anything."

"Man, 35 mph! I'm really flying! But I'm not working very hard..."

"Gee, I really do miss cranking right now. Driving just isn't very satisfying."

"It sure is easy to drive, but I could be earning these miles instead of just driving them!"

Then, after I get to work:

"Where's that feeling of power and strength I get from cycling?"

I enjoy the "down time" of a car-commute every so often. Yes, I remark that the hills seem a whole lot easier. Yes, it seems that to drive at 20 MPH is to seemingly crawl.

But I do like the CD blaring, the coffee, and watching the occasional bike-commuter as he (always a he, have you noticed?) spins into work.

During those days I'll turn around and my office will be lacking the "Green Monster". I will not be as fired up in the morning and I will not be fired up at the prospect of riding home either. I'll pay attention to the winds and remark on how I'll be missing a serious tailwind-boosted ride home.

Still, the mix is what I enjoy. As long as it's roughly a 70-30 mix of b-c'ing to c-c'ing.

I found this out when I started to slack off my commute. I'm back at it now after almost 3 weeks in hiatus.

You have to watch out, it's easy to get into a bad habbit.

I used to mix it up a little between the bike and the car but I've only driven to work a handful of times this year when I have absolutely had to.

I feel lost if I haven't ridden.

When I see a cyclist on the days I'm behind the wheel I feel like I'm missing out.

What is car commuting? You mean people actually do this?

If this is correct, then the Chicago cycling community must be filled with the most convincing female impersonators that I've ever seen.

I wish I could say the same thing here. :(

I'm moving to Chicago, because they're invariably he's over here in San Jose. Wait. Chicago. Cold. Nope, I'll stay here in SJ. Besides, there's only a few b-c'ers anyway.
