Training & Nutrition - Free Online Training Log

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Searching turned up a thread that had a link to a neat, free, web-based training log. The site apparently was developed by a member. Pretty slick, easy to use, and did I mention free? If you want to start keeping a training log with your mileage, speeds, etc., its worth a look: ActiveBody.org (http://www.activebody.org/index.php)

I recommend against bikejournal, unless you like paying for stuff. Sure there's a free option, but I don't think it counts.

Bike Journal is awesome. You get plenty of features if you don't want to register, but it's well worth the $10 for a premier membership. The guy that runs that site (slantz) has put a ton of work into it.
There is no way to transfer your data from one to the other easily is there? Activebody looks cool...but I've been using bikejournal for a year now... ;)

That would be me.
My name is clint and I had used lots of other web based sites out there to keep track of my biking in the past. After some time with each site, I didn't like one thing or the other and thought it was time I made my own. I'll be 100% honest; if you like the other sites, WAY COOL, I think they are great as well. But if you want to try something else, feel free to try www.activebody.org. I enjoy the fact that things I create help people manage their fitness.
There are also other PC based software as well... The author does hit these forums so I suspect he will post some info (or others that use his software) on that option as well. I just don't remember the specific info.
Long story short... lots of cool stuff out there to maintain fitness, find one you like and start going after your goals!
Cheers all,
Clint
Having used the free site activebody.org for 3 years now, I can say it is the best free option out there. It is great for tracking all of your workouts, whether its cycling, swimming, weightlifting or running. The calender tracker is a great motivational tool; nothing like looking back on the year and watching your miles climb over the months to get your butt in the saddle and put a few more in by the 31st.
Everyone has their favorite site, and activebody.org is mine. I think its worth a look.
I switched from Workout Log to activebody.org this year and have been very happy with it. Good job, Clint!

I really like ActiveBody.org. It's been a nice way for me to easily track my rides, allows me to log multiple bikes, include weather info, and track my progress toward my goals. I haven't seen a better free resource like this. Try it!
...Good job, Clint!
the more i use and explore the more i like....
and love not seeing banner ads and pop-ups...
two plugs: if you appreciate the free, non-commercial sites like this forum and the activebody.org, show your appreciation here by upgrading to a red-star membership, or by clicking the 'make a donation' link at activebody.org.....
i know that sort of spoils the 'free' part, but making a voluntary paypal shot here and there is a vote for non-commercial web sites and a nice way to support the time and work that goes into them....

thanks for the plug... I hate bringing up that aspect of hosting a free site, but that does not remove the fact that the cost to run activebody is about $50 a month.
I think I'll go get my red star now... :)

Ditto that; and I'm on the cusp of cracking the top ten in the TdF Challenge :-)

....
now i see what you mean. wish i had started this months ago. as it is, i only have 2 measly days recorded...
and knowing that the first thing you will do after a ride is to record the data makes you go that much harder and faster....
does anyone else wish there was a 'max speed' field? or am i missing something? i'm recording that in the 'notes' section for each ride, but would like to track that too if possible..
can't wait to see that calendar fill up and those graphs go down/up as appropriate!

and you are also #7 in the GC??? hmm, sounds like it's time for a random dope test!
another enhancement request (and thread bump): a report for avg speed? hope it's not right there in front of my face, but if not, would like to track that, too...

Sounds good. The best place to add suggestions is the activebody forums suggestion area as well.
I'm heading out of vacation folks, but will be checking my email from time to time. If I don't respond it's just because I'm enjoying some family time.
Have a good couple of weeks all!

Does anyone track their ride conditions - specifically wind? I just got back from a ride and checked weather.com and accuweather.com and they said southerly winds & 6 mph. However, when I was on the ride, there are some buildings with giant flags and those things were straight out b/c of the wind. I don't think a measley 6 mph wind could do that. Where does everyone go for accurate weather details?
Can anyone get to activebody.org today? My browser just sits there forever trying to load the page and doesn't return any error or anything.
edit: n/m...it's an IE thing...for some reason IE just sits there, but I got right on with Firefox.

Ostuni, I completely agree with you. Bikeforums and other free sites like it couldn't exist without voluntary user contributions. It amazes me that many very regular posters to Bikeforums haven't upgraded to the Red Star. The frequent use of the site certainly says they're satisfied. Common everyone - step up to the Star!

If you are in the US and put your zip code in your profile, then the activebody site will pull the weather info and add it to your ride data.

I just started up on activebody - thanks for the tip.
... and regarding another tip, you should now see a red star by my name! I meant to do it after the first month, but forgot - it's good to remind people, especially people like me who mean well, but are just generally dumb.

cool glad you like it. I've found that it might slow the page down a little as it goes and grabs the latest weather data, but I'm never in that much of a hurry.
you should also see a weather section on the home pages of the activties (cycling, running...) as well as 10 day forecast.
Enjoy,

yeah, i periodically try to find and bump the original 'red star plug' thread but i'm running out of excuses to do that! boogs, maybe you could dig up that thread and bump it with your reminder?

Yep Clints site rocks! I have been using it for a couple of years now and if I hadn't thrown my back out I'd still be logging some rides. Actually I'm getting back on the bike now for the first time since June 4th. OUCH! And do not be afraid to donate; it is free to use but as you know some one is always paying for it. I too have made a donation and if I were using it more this year I'd be donating again....maybe next season Clint ;)
I'll try to find it.
that's easy: 'search the forums' for keyword = red star plug!!

i even broke down, went against every cheapskate bone in my body, and chipped in a second donation to equal what i paid for the red star on this forum... figure they're both worth way more than that anyway...

I found it immediately, and have filled in my July up to today. :)

Um, Milwaukee's Best for the old-school 2-Streeters, various malt liquors for everyone else. Me, I drink Coors Extra Gold if I'm poor, Bass if I'm rich, and water if I'm serious. :D
I signed up and took a look at the tool. It looks great, except I don't know that I want to enter all that data into my computer. I use a free tool called BikeLog on my Palm computer. It captures basic information (mileage, avg speed, top speed, etc.) and I can carry it easily to my bike to enter the data. If I had one of those cyclocomputers that could transfer the data automatically (POLAR?), activebody would be a better choice.
BTW: I just ordered Bicycling Magazine's Ultimate Ride Guide from www.bookcloseouts.com for $1.49, regular List Price $14.95 as part of their Inventory Reduction Sale.
Overview:
This spiral-bound log will be the last thing you put down before getting on your bike and the first thing you pick up on your return. The Ultimate Ride Guide is destined to become an integral part of your ride ritual. Some of the great tools inside this log include: a strength-training program for cyclists; a calorie-burn chart to help you reach your ideal weight; how to handle the toughest traffic situations; how to train for a century and a double century; the best energy foods to take on a ride; detailed logs to make your best rides last forever; how to fix a flat in three minutes without tools; what to wear on rides.

Hey all,
As many of you are finding on your own... the activebody site is temp down. This could not come at a worst time as I found out from the hosting company an hour before I jumped on a flight for vacation. Needless to say I spent the entire day trying to get the full story from the hosting admin as I was landing and waiting for the next flight.
As it stands, it looks like for some unknown reason each HTTP requst was topping the memory usage on the server. Nobody knows the reason, but they are looking into it.
Like I said, this could not come at a worst time as some of the places I'm going does not have internet connect. This means I'm out of the loop besides my cell phone. Please know that I'm working as hard as I can to get this site back up as soon as possible. If you could pass the info to others on the forum, that would be a big help.
I hate vacations...

sorry about this folks...

Thanks Clint! I was seriously jonesing to be able to input my last couple of rides; now cracked the top ten in the TdF challenge as well as the top five in the Polka Dot jersey competition!
Enjoy your vacation!

Have you thought about making this training diary into a "widget" for Konfabulator (konfabulator.org)? I was looking through their widget gallery, and I can't find anything that approaches this particular app, but it seems like a natural fit, as much as a "to do list" or a local traffic watcher.

If you were talking about an avtivebody.org widget, yea I have. I just recently got back into mac's with the latest version of OS X and have been very much enjoying it. My windows XP systems are collection dust at this point because I enjoy this OS so much. In saying that I have thought about making an activebody widget to add data to the activebody website (without going to the website itself). For the windows side, I could build a konfabulator widget as well.
Time will tell... there are a few things I want to work on for the site outside of this idea so perhaps at a later time. I have such limited time these days that I really have to pick and choose...
thanks,
clint

I recommend against bikejournal, unless you like paying for stuff. Sure there's a free option, but I don't think it counts.
Bikejournal.com is FREE....now if you want to support the hard work of the site owner with your $10 annual donation you can, but it is optional.

Had thought about that, but all I'm looking for is a little help to pay for hosting the site. I'm not even looking for full 100%, but half. That seems far to me, and it helps others get in and us the site without having to feel like they "need" to donate.
With that said, people can donate as much as they like, the more support from users, the more likely the site will stay alive.
We will have another donation drive in the winter time.
next time double the goal!
