On OLN the other day Kirsten Gum did a piece on what Gerolsteiner drank and how Levi Leipheimer drank something different. I wasn't really listening to what she was saying -- just staring at her chest.

I was wondering what they did -- thanks. Anyone know if Lotto is the shoe company (Boris Becker wore Lotto's)?

This is vaguely related to the topic: I was talking to this guy that just moved into our frat house for the summer...he's friends w/ one of the bros. Apparently he used to race w/ a bunch of the young guys that are now in the tour, and he said that a lot of the time a bike sponsor, say Fuji would example, would put a Fuji paint job on a better brand of bike if they didn't have a good enough bike or a well-fitting bike for the rider. He said that several bikes in the tour were probably other brands than they were painted. I found this pretty interesting!

Nope. Lotto is the national lottery of Belgium.

That isn't too far from the truth.

I was riding with a member of the US cycling team last night, and he told me that when they unzip their jerseys on hard climbs, they get yelled at over the team radio. "Zip that back up! The cameras can't see the sponser!"

The team uses Enervit energy drinks except for Levi who uses something else (missed the name but it's tropical punch flavoured). My eyes were in the same place as yours however... though I did lose focus briefly when she said "puke".

Yep. It's not uncommon. Lance rode a Litespeed in the '99 Tour, rebadged as a Trek. Pretty sure the bike that Rebellin rode last year was rebadged.. I remember there being some debate about it. Also, the TT bike that Ullrich used in '03 and '04 (not sure if he's still using it this year) was a custom made bike rebadged as a Giant. I think the same is the case for Leipheimer's TT bike this year. I'm not sure on the details, but I'm sure some of the others know.

That's why you always see the riders zip up as they approach the stage finish sprint - even Lance was unzipped climbing the other day, but zipped up in the last 1-2 km (enough to make sure the Discovery logo on the front was not impaired) before the sprint with Valverde.

Years ago, the US national team rode Huffy's, that were actually Serotta's.

New here but I have a question, when the teams "rebadge" a bike, is the new bike from a manufacturer that the teams sponsor has part or full ownership of? Devil said Lance road a Litespeed with Trek's name on it. Does or did Trek have some investment in Litespeed or did they actually have to purchase the bike?

According to Pez, Cyfac bikes are all over the peloton ... but you won't actually "see" Cyfac anywhere.

As for Tour sponsors:

Credit Lyonnais (http://www.creditlyonnais.com/servlet/Gcex?DEST=HOME) - banking
Champion (http://www.champion.fr) - supermarket
PMU (http://www.pmu.fr/pmu/html/eng/corporate/index.htm) - horse racing and wagering
Skoda (http://www.skoda-auto.com/global) - automobiles but originally bicycles

U.S. Postal, T-Mobile and the Discovery Channel are U.S. businesses, so I am familiar with them. What products or services are the other team sponsors "selling", and in which countries?

As was already mentioned, T-Mobile isn't a US company. However, CSC is US based.

Wasn't Lance riding rebadged TT bikes as recently as '03?

Rebadged equipment (Skis) are also common place in World Cup Ski Teams.

I heard that Trek actually purchased the Litespeed TT frames for Lance - at $6K a pop!

I never thought that deep, I thought he zipped because of the descent, which was true, to prevent the wind from coming inside, more aerodyamic.

They mentioned something about it today. The first rider to the finish didn't zip his Jersey up, and Phil said something along the lines of "Oh the sponsers aren't going to like that! Nobody's going to see their logo when the photo is in the paper."

Great article on Cyclingnews.com. Lists every team and exactly what business they're in.

Enjoy.
