Advocacy & Safety - Road Bike Helmet vs. Mtn. Bike Helmet

Do road bike helmets enclose the head more than mtn. bike helmets? I have been looking at pictures of riders and the mtn bike helmets look like they sit higher on the head exposing more forehead. The road bike helmets show little forehead. Is this true?

Only difference Ive noticed is mountain bike helmets seem to have more protection on the back of the head.

I've actually wondered the same thing. I recently got a mountain bike helmet because it had a great visor to it in addition to the fact that I do mostly trail riding. However, to get to the trails you have to ride on the road and it made me wonder if or what the exact difference there is except for marketing. I assume all helmets are made of a similar material and construction so I'm also curious if there is any difference besides the marketing of one over the other for a particular rider.

I never compared them head-to-head.... ;)

I use a MTB helmet for the road because I like having a visor.

I just picked up a road helmet (Giro Transfer) and it seems to come down farther on my head, whereas my mtb helmet (Specialized Air Force) feels like it sits on top of my head. Of course, this can't necessarily be generalized to ALL helmets, but that's my experience.
