no, it's not the early 90s again, but i saw a roadie riding with a really cool looking "tool belt" yesterday, and it got me thinking. i know that Fabric Horse (http://www.fabrichorse.com) makes custom ones for $120; but that's out of my price range, and this guy's didn't look very custom. anyone have any leads?

i was thinking about getting one of those fabricehorse belts (very pricey), but i was thinking- wouldn't it get really heavy and obstruct your riding, what with all the ulocks, pumps, pockets, etc...? it seems like it would seriously weigh you down.

Thus the jersey pockets.

It's also kinda pricey for what it is, but then again it's US made handbuilt stuff and it's pretty unobtrusive. Not as much storage as the fabric horse belt, but then again, unless you're batman what the hell do you need an entire utility belt for?

i find it funny how the fixed riders have such light minimal rides and then carry huge messenger bags , u-locks, 3' Krypto nyc chain around the waist, and any new doo dad that the messenger culture rocks.

i usually only ride with a lock and a bottle of water, and don't need to use a huge bag to carry two relatively small things. thus, the idea of using a waist pack was born...

In all seriousness then, I would also check some outlets for other sports like ATV and motorcycles. Years ago, when I went trailriding with a motor, I used a fannypack from Fox racing (i think) that was fairly compact and had a spot for a water battle on the outside and slots for tools inside, and a little pouch for tubes, candybars, and other essentials.

Happy shopping.

I'm interested in using a waist pack too, to keep from having a sweat covered backpack stamp across my back whenever I arrive someplace, and trying to keep cool. The convential wisdom seems to be that getting the load higher on the back is better, and lower on the hips worse.

Anybody ride with something like this? (http://www.paragonsports.com/Paragon/Shop?DSP=40000&PCR=1:101:1004:10059&IID=5354-PQ5ST&Key=Arcteryx_Q_Lumbar_Pack_Fanny_Packs_Backpacks_Bags_Equipment)

They have a slightly beefier (http://www.paragonsports.com/Paragon/Shop?DSP=40000&PCR=1:101:1004:10059&IID=5354-PQ10ST&Key=Arcteryx_Q_Lumbar_Pack_Fanny_Packs_Backpacks_Bags_Equipment) version too.

but if y'didn't carry it on your body your ride would not look light or minimal. it would look like this

thus solving all the problems except the light, minimal ride part.

I can actually get by most days with a jersey (vintage or not - so long as it has two or three pockets in back) or with some cargo shorts, a mini u-lock and that's about it.

Phone, wallet, keys all go into various assorted pockets. Some days I carry only the phone and a few bucks in case I need to get home or something. Unless I'm going to stay long somewhere (thus bringing a second u-lock or a cable) or I'm out shooting (SLR in bag) then I really don't need to bring stuff.

As far as tools go, I could bring a spare inner tube or a patch kit and a C02 inflator and an allen key set (no need for the 15mm - I ride Phils which makes things so much easier) and be set. We all go to great lengths to use good solid tires like Gatorskins and Armadillos so why not put your trust in them?

Travelling light is so nice.

since the weather has gotten better, no need for layers of clothes...i often just a basic repair kit & mini pump / tube and misc bs in a small wedge then place my mini lock on top of it between it and the seat....although this often get me the look from those hardcore types

If I need to carry more than what fits in my pockets I ride with a 15 year old mountainsmith lumbar pack. Its bombproof and I'd much rather have the load hanging off my backside than up on my back.

Big enough for a six-pack or two, but also scrunches down pretty flat.

Mountainsmith lumbar packs rock the block party. Totally bombproof.

I also frequently ride with an old Camelbak FlashFlo, one of their first few models. It holds a liter of water in a fanny pack style bag. Its got a main strap and two compression straps, a pocket for the water bladder, and another little pocket. Its also got a blinky strap, which is nice. Its very simple, and very handy. I like it.

Sorry. I just noticed. The pouch can hold a lot of MP3s. Maybe the copywriters need practice on the concept of 'how many Angeles fit on the head of a pin/.

Perfect for listening to tunes while on the trail! A pouch inside the main pocket secures your music player, leaving lots of storage for CDs, tapes or MP3s. A perforated rubber hole in the front of the waist pack ensures that you don’t tangle headphone cords. An elasticized strap secures the neck of your 620-millilitre water bottle (included). The reflective piping increases visibility to others in low light

Yeah because anyone who rides fixed is the same, none of us have brakes and respect for anyone else. Were all rebels with or without a cause. Maybe you shouldnt make such sweeping statements.

i love it while i work at the bike shop or when i'm photo assisting.
my needs: right side beverage holder for water on hot days or beer cosey or when it's winter it converts into a mitten pouch or digital camera holder, back part for mini ulock (if i ever lock up for a few) to get coffee, left side zip pouch for my sling shot / day planner, pens, or whatever, water proof cell phone holder in the front along with a business card holder and in the back i got two extra hooks for tools to sling around or that 120 film i need to get pretty fast. those are some of my needs.

fabric horse's tool belts are complety custom.

I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but I've got a webbed belt and several small compartments which fit on it from the army surplus store. I use it for climbing, too. Works great and it's modular. Good luck.

Other cheap alternatives:

1. Tool Belt: Cheap ones are nylon, and they have lots of pouches and loops. Plus, you can easily carry a hammer.

2. Fishing Vest: Tonnes of pockets, fashionable (maybe), and it distributes the weight all over your torso. Plus, they are already designed to be breathable.

Bagaboo make a decent thingy for holding odds and sods: The Messenger Sorter. It's pretty sizeable - big enough for a D-lock and some paperwork and all sorts of stuff. The build quality is excellent, and Tamas is a really helpful chap.

I dunno...be dissin to call some of the things listed here as "fanny packs" :D I know the fabrichorse folk are a toolbelt, and tamas probably makes what e'd call a hip pouch, least that's what most folk call them now. Fanny pack....sounds all bad 80s! Bad 80s! The good 80s didn't involve any fanny packs.
We have a hip thing, but it's no fanny pack! ours (http://www.under-the-weather.ca/bags2H.html)

edit: and I don't think many Army folk wold be wearing any fanny packs either!

....fanny packs!

ha!

my contribution to this thread is this; just because the girl in napoleon dynamite had a ponytail on the side of her head, that doesn't mean that its okay to start wearing fanny packs, nor does it make late 80s/early 90s neon colors 'kitschy'

just remember, MTV made that movie.

seriously, though, (and this is somewhat off-topic as far as cycling is concerned) what's up with fannypacks? i've seen them a lot on some of the more coke-addled white belt and white sunglass wearing hipsters in the past couple of years.

also, true enough, most people never wore them in back, though i suppose pube pouch would have sold even fewer satchels.

can i say pube pouch on this forum?

I've got my parachute pants at the ready for when they come back.

Seems like people are trying to be SO hip they are too hip for a messenger bag now. If you only hae a few things to carry get a smaller messenger bag. Or break out the buster brown backpack. Then you can be a trend setter and bring something else back from fashion history to live again! ;)

All this outfitting yourself as a comando and other weirdness is funny to me. When I think of "tool belts" I think of Norm from This Old House.

But to each his own!
