View Full Version : tough ladies' pants?

okay. first off, fixed gear content to keep the mods at bay:

most fixed riders do not wear the typical cycling getup. we prefer to look like humans, rather than time travellers or aliens.

now, to the point. most brands that make really nice, tough, work-style pants (ie carhartt) do not make anything with a women's fit. i'm posting on behalf of my fixed-gear-riding lady to see if you nice folks have any tips on something tough and no nonsense for the female lower half.

whatcha got?

I agree...

Dickies has a girls line (dickies girl). If you live in or near NYC my best friend of 15 years runs a Dickies girl showroom in times square, if you want to go check them out PM me for details.

PS they have the cutest shants that fit great and are perfecy for riding... fixed of course!

they call them kinkers though, see their shorts section too, they have "tomboy pants"

They're unisex, but some of the stuff about them works extra well for the ladies, extra room in the thighs/bum for the well developed cyclist, the water resistant bum is flattering for both sexes when they've got what lots of cycling can give you. They're also high in the back/waist depending on where you wear them. It's good for a ladies form in that regard but the actual intent is "No Crack" while riding.

Too bad we don't have a bunch left, unless we still have your size left it'll be a few months before the new model is out. Personally I can't wait but I get excited over such things, being what we do and all.

The girly dickies don't fit my ghetto booty. Well actually they kinda do as long as I'm standing up, but I'm not into the whole butt crack chic thing when I ride. :) But old navy (I know, yuck, but give it a chance) makes short black pants. Maybe they're called bermuda shorts. I don't really know. . . They fit just below the waist and are nice and comfy. I bought 2 pairs @ $20.00 each and haven't cycled in anything else since.

While I can't comment on anything from a female perspective here, I will say this - the Under the Weather pants are fantastic. I practically live in mine.

Ever talked to Crystal at http://www.girlbike.com/ ?

Her site is down momentarily, but you can talk to her direct at crystal@girlbike.com.

It is a site with more than one woman contributing. I don't know that any of them like to use cycle wear other than the usual spandex.

The folks at Rivendell also don't particularily like looking like aliens. They sell some things that might be up your alley and are designed to be unisex.

Personally, I still use the typical spandex padded shorts, but don't mind a searsucker shirt in the hot weather. In the cold a good wool shirt works too.

yes - I think FDave tried to sing a song he had written about these friggin things, performed with an ocarina intro and then a lute. FDave hates everything, so these must be good. I am glad he forgot about the song once we started talking Mitsuwa

I live in my knickers by Harlot clothing (yes, this is my namesake, not so much a result of my catholic upbringing). I've had them for 2 years and they've been bomber year round. They're a small women's company based in CO so you're supporting an excellent cause. They created their own sort of chamois they call BCZ (beaver comfort zone - not making this up!) for all their knickers and shorts. It's thin and comfy and not like wearing a diaper. They're ~$75, but they're for real riding/commuting/mtb-ing, etc. and you don't have to deal with zippers or painful seams or rubbing in the wrong places. And if you consider how long they last and what you would pay for bike shorts anyway, they're a good value.

Prana also makes women's knickers, but I couldn't bring myself to parade around in trendy yoga/climbing gear.

On Tuesday I'm recording a 2-song EP. One song will be about how everything except those pants sucks. The other song will be how drinking little cups of tea from Mitsuwa dulls the pain of this reality.

i don't see any different products on the "europe" section of carhartt.com

a pair of these pants lasts several years, so it seems like it would be worth the trouble of getting a pair of them from europe, if i can locate them.

Prana also makes women's knickers, but I couldn't bring myself to parade around in trendy yoga/climbing gear.

The Prana Mantis knicker, a "mens" model, fits both me and my female partner pretty well. They are comfortable on the bike, made of wicky-wicking material, and have some good things like mesh pockets and a gusseted crotch (no seam running down the middle!). However as you note they are more designed for (literally) posing so they tend to expose Le Crack. Also the cuffs are not pegged enough, so they get caught on my water bottle cage unless I roll them up. I do usually roll them up though. I've taken them on several 20-mi rides and been quite comfortable (and stylish of course).

they are not tough as in Dickies tough, but they're good for general riding as well as the occasional long-ish jaunt.

why the hell doesnt anyone make completely black capris?? the harlots look nice but they are not all black. and everyone else thinks its cool to use contrast stitching. bastards.

for the record, i ride in dickies (very heavy and non-breathable tho) and puma capris (for when i want to breathe).

Dickies' Girl line doesn't fit me at all. In fact, most women-specific pants don't. There's not enough room in the butt, and they're way too low. Mostly for the thong-specific crowd.

I tend to wear men's pants, but I've been rocking some Lee women's capris that fit really nicely. I just picked up a new pair at Marshall's for $13. The only problem is that the pockets are really small.

and why is it so hard to find black active clothing in general? i have some miracle-fibre pants that I love, that are very comfy and good for riding, but they're in varying shades of "butternut", or "PC box," or something, and uniformly grease-tagged. I shudder to think what they'd look like if I rode with a black Brooks.

SamHouston's black-on-black pants are lookin' pretty good to me. :)

my girl dickies ALWAYS wear out in the ass after 3-4 months. I think the girls line is not as sturdy as the boys line, that you can buy at walmart for a lot less.
I wear them anyway, because I think they're cute, and I don't have to change after commuting to my 9-5.
I have a pair of hurley capris that have lasted over a year, that are almost identical to dickies, and much much thicker, but since I stole them from my little sister, I have no idea where she bought them.

so i bought some of these shorts since two people that i like recommended them.

i booted down for a harlot freeride knicker (reco'd by harlot), and the sit'n'spin pants from sam houston (under the weather) (reco'd by fugazi dave). yes, this was an expensive test!

the sit'n'spins are cool - they fit well, are as black as they come, and have tons of pockets. that triple seat worried me a little tho, and i wasnt sure the material was breathable. but it was!! i rode 25 miles on a 100 degree day and was soaking wet but didnt really notice it. i wouldnt recommend these for longer rides (chafing on the many seams), but they are great for around-town.

next up: the harlots. oh my god, these are sooo soft and comfy!! you dont even notice the padding! they arent all black like i had wanted but i can live with that for the softness. good fit too! these are definitely for the longer rides, what with the padding and no pockets.

i still ride mostly dickies, but will be looking at more harlots for sure. if you want sit'n'spins, check out the crazy 'fire' color. i have never seen anything quite like it, and you probably havent either! also, both companies shipped the same day (both within an hour, actually), of when i ordered. sam was super-cool to deal with, and very prompt with replies. also the only all-black capris i found! and its always nice to have that personal touch!

so, here's a quick review for the ladies shants topic. i need something i feel comfortable riding around in that can be worn to meetings and after work events as well. i'm in the creative field so i don't need suits, but cut-off dickies and jeans don't hack it anymore. last week at belmont wheelworks i picked up these:
http://www.shebeest.com/products/broadride_capri.html
they come with a spandex and magical blue chamois that you can opt to wear or not to wear underneath the shants. the shants themselves have a high back which is great to avoid the crack habit. also i've got back and they flatter that aspect while remaining comfortable. they breathe well, dry quick, and i've already tested their pavement toughness and they seemed to stand up ok. (couldn't get out of my new clipless - 0 mph!)
my one criticism is that the snap already broke, so i replaced it with a big hook and eye and two smaller snaps. also they don't have belt loops, though they do have a little pocket on the right front side and two zip-pockets on the back. at $85 they're not cheap, but when i consider chrome shants, i feel like it's a pretty good deal. happy cycling ladies.

My girl rocks levis. They usualy wear out the saddle before the pants start to fade. She cuts 'em off or rolls 'em up. She says for girls that's the best way to go.

Most of my pants are man pants that I've tailored to fit better. I've never really been into any of the girl specific pants especially the shants / capris because they always seem to be closer to the capri end of the the spectrum than the shants one, but those swerve knickers look pretty nice.

If I'm not in work clothes, I just wear rolled BDUs. I don't care any more how I look when I'm off-duty, I've got a bike that needs to be ridden.

i'll have to try some dickies girl shants. i'm a guy who can't seem to find well-fitted pants and denim without paying over $100 per pair at a boutique— which is obscene when i can often find similar fits on the women's rack for $25–40. oh, and i'm on the east coast.

I never really saw the necessity of wearing bike-specific clothing until I really started riding a lot and wore out the two pair of pants I own. I will be getting these, they look awesome for riding and for the weather now, wearing to work after, and generally not looking like an ass.
