Should you really need a law to make people look before opening doors in traffic?

Hey, most people don't pay attention WHEN they are "driving", I can't imagine the same group paying attentioin when exiting their auto regardless of the law.
Sad, but true.

Quote from the Boston article:
"Drivers should be careful when opening doors, but bicyclists also have a responsibility to obey traffic laws and not operate their bikes in a reckless manner, said Arthur Kinsman, spokesman for AAA Southern New England.
The proposed $500 fine is out of line with other traffic violations, Kinsman said.
''To me, a $500 fine sounds absurdly high,'' Kinsman said. "
Consider the source. Although AAA is a helpful organization for most people overall. they are notoriously anti-bike in my opinion. Their mission is to pave over the country, increase sprawl and put everyone in a SUV. It is in their best interest since it brings in lots of money to their organization.

Let's put Mr. Kinsman on a bike. I'll door him and pay the $500. He gets a broken nose and busted wrist.
I wonder if he would like the sound of that better.
And what exactly does
bicyclists also have a responsibility to obey traffic laws and not operate their bikes in a reckless manner have to do with getting doored?
Marty
Then obey the traffic laws and take the lane when there are lots of parked cars!

In a perfect world, we wouldn't need any laws at all. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world.
