Does any one know if Lance uses a compact drive on the mountain stages. Do the teams change to a larger size cassettes for the more demanding stages. I tried to search for the particulars of the gearing and cycle components for the team bikes, but can't seem to find any info.

Lance does not need compact gearing...look at the grades that they ride up...they make a big deal about 6%. The grades may not be very steep, but they do it after riding 100 plus miles and the climbs are 10 miles long! Remember, guys can just stay with them when they run at full speed next to them...so that's about 15 to 17 mph. That's what makes it tough is the pace and the length of the climbs. I think half the time, Lance is still in his big ring.

Basso uses compact.

Caught a glimpse of Basso's rings today. Was wondering if he had a triple. What was his small ring?

he used a 36 small ring in the Giro, so he may be using that again? anyone know what Lance used in the Giro?

I'm pretty sure Lance used a television set for the giro this year. :)

Floyd and the gang also used compacts today, according to the guy updating his power files on bicycling.

supposedly Hamilton ran a compact last year. I suppose if you never have to worry about sprinting it might be ok. 50X11 is equal to 122.7, and a 53x12 comes to 119.2

hm. maybe there is something to this after all.

what's the theory on compact drives? smaller gaps between gears? less over lap between chain rings? didn't suntour or someone try and pull this off in the early 90s and it went nowhere?
