Touring - touring with a nine speed?

Has anyone ever toured with a 9 speed bike? I am thinking of building a Surly karate monkey up for credit card touring , and as city bike. I want to run nine speeds, so I can switch it to a fixed gear when not on tour, and use the same crank set. It seems like it would be feasible, if I am not carrying heavy loads.

Nine speed as opposed to what? Are you talking nine speed cassette and a single chainring setup?

Sorry if I was unclear. Yes, I mean a 9 speed cassette and a single chainring. The other option is to use multiple chain rings and put in a different crankset when I switch between fixed, and touring ( which I would rather not do).

its ugly, but you can just leave the three rings on a triple crankset and just run the chain over which ever one is fine for the chainline in the fixed gear...

yeah, I have one right now, I just hate the idea of having more than one bike, as does my tiny nyc apartment

That's true, not sure if I could look at that on a daily basis though and not feel excessive.
