View Full Version : Are helmet mandatory at all times this year?

Something I noticed today in the hot alpine stage was all of the riders had their helmets on unlike years past where they would discard their brain-buckets as soon as they attacked the mountains.

Was there a rule change this year? :)

I thought they were still able to remove their helmets if it was a summit finish that exceeded a certain length (5km, I think). Was this rule changed?

I think that last year if a stage ended on a category climb, the riders were allowed to ditch the helmets for that last climb only. it appears that this rule has been changed. all helmets, all the time.

Helmets are not required (an error in judgement, IMHO) in one case:

2. During competitions on the road, a rigid safety helmet shall be worn.

Except where legal provisions determine otherwise, riders taking part in UCI ProTour
events may, at their own risk, refrain from wearing a helmet during individual
time trial races taking place entirely on a mountainous course. Every discussion
regarding the qualification «entirely on a mountainous course» will be
decided by the commissaires’ panel.

Hasn't this question been posed, asked, and answered several times in this Forum already? By the same person?? ???
