Road Cycling - Determining CAT Racing levels

What determines the CAT racer category? In other words, what makes you a CAT 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 racer ?

Is it your speed in the mountains or flats, your power output (WATTS) or ability to climb hard and long, etc, etc?

Please visit www.usacycling.org and download the handbook. In it is lists the requirements. For example, anyone who buys a license in a 5 automatically. Upgrading to a 4 requires at least 10 mass starts in USCF sanctioned events. All other upgrades are based on a points systems relative to placings at USCF events.

Wins!!! :D If you win a race, you earn upgrade points. Placing within top 7, you also earn lesser upgrade points. Once you have enough points, you can upgrade to a higher cat level. Top is cat1 and cat5 is the beginner. With cat5, you just need to start 10 races. You are qualified to upgrade to cat4, that's when REAL racing begins. To go from 4 to 3, you need something like:

4-3: Need 20 points in any 12-month period; or experience in 25 qualifying races with a minimum of 10 top ten finishes. 30 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade
3-2: Need 25 points in any 12-month period. 60 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade.
2-1: Need 30 points in any 12-month period. 60 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade.

Just like R600DA said, everyone starts at 5 unless they were say 1 or 2 and did not renew the licence. 5 to 4 is the easiest upgrade, after that it is points or points and experience. You get something like 7 points for a win, 5 for second, 3 or 4 for 3rd, etc. Stage races count for GC and individual stages.

While speed does not determine upgrades, you must be racing at the speed that the next cat is upgrading to be able to hang in the next cats.
