I know that a 9 speed hub will take an 8 speed cassette but will a 8 speed hub take a 9 speed cassette or is the 9 speed hub infact longer. i know 9 speed uses narrower spacing. if thats the case will my 1999 Deore LX 8 speed hub take a 9 speed LX or XT or w/e cassette

sweet so ALL 8 speed shimano hubs are 9 speed compatible AND vice versa as in all i need is cassette, shifter, and chain (my crankset is already 9 speed and so is derailleur)

Nope, slap it on there and you're done! :) The 9sp cassette takes up the same room as an 8sp.

i asked a friend of mine and he said the 8 SPEED hub is only compatible with the 8 speed cassette.. and the 9 speed is compatible with both. is this tru or is he wrong

Knowing Shimano's history of changing freehub-body designs in the past, you'd think they would have made them mutually exclusive... but not this time :) Check the following link, it should put your mind at ease: http://bike.shimano.com/mtb/deorelx/ComponentTemplate.asp?partnumber=FH-M570 9sp is backwards-compatible to the 8sp hubs.

yah but that comes on a 9 speed hub.. i have a 1999 LX 8 speed hub
im not looking for backwards-compatibility im looking for forwards compatibility.

Sure thing :) The spline pattern between the two types is the same, so they didn't change that aspect. The length of the freehub body is the same, the lockrings haven't changed, and the cassette takes the same amount of space on the freehub body.

If you go to 9sp, what are you picking for shifters? Do you have Gripshift, separate Shimano shifter pods, or integrated shift/brake controls? If I were moving to 9sp I would be getting Megarange while I was at it, that would be the primary attraction for me. :)

i just want the extra three gears for my cadence.. and i get lx shifters or something.. i already got LX levers so no need to buy new levers. ill get XT or XTR shifters if my price is cheap enough. As for levers, i would not get STI cuz ive heard if u brake it its a ***** to fix.
