Towards the end of June I developed a pain over the outside of my right hip while running. I completely stopped running for nearly three weeks. It was getting better and then I ran in a sprint tri yesterday and now its pretty painful again. I have researched the symptoms on the internet and think its Trochanteric Bursitis. Not sure though. Anybody else experienced hip pain while running? Any advice other than rest and ice? My swim and bike went great yesterday but my run totally sucked due to not running for three weeks. I have an olympic distance tri Sept. 3rd. I'd like to be able to train running for a few weeks beforehand at least.

gut tells me IT band. Research for IT Band(Iliotibial band) streches. It starts at the side of your hip and follows the outside of your hip down around below your knee. That is why the ITB is commonly connected with knee pain, but is not uncommon to have pain anywere alone the band.
The best thing for this besides proper rest, icing, and streching. Is to be checked out by a professional sports medicine doctor/physiotherapist. Look into ART, I was treated by a chiropracter that does ART after a race on sunday for my left ITB, and it felt great after.

Thanks. I think your gut is right. You are correct that the ITB runs right up the outside of the hip. Trochanteric Bursitis involves the inflammation of that upper ITB. I'll look into the active release stuff. Thanks.

Its almost certainly IT Band.
Sometimes strengthening exercises can help in a week or two. They can prevent future problems. One of the best is in the leg extension machine (please never use this crappy machine except for this purpose). Put the weight on something ridiculously low along the lines of 10lbs. One leg at a time lift with your foot turned about 30degrees out (30deg external rotation). This should recruit vastus medialis which is the muscle bump on the inside of your knee. Two sets of 8-12 on each side about 2-3xweek may very well prevent future problems. It just balances the muscles in your leg.
Rolling it out on a foam roller is good too but ART works magic.

Thanks for the responses and advice.
One of my clients is an orthopedic surgeon. I e-mailed him today with my symptoms and thinks I am correct that it is trocanteric bursitis. He wants me to come see him in the next day or two for a precautionary x-ray and referal to PT for strengthening and stretching. He said he may do a cortisone shot also. We'll see . . . I really want to get back to running. I have an olympic distance tri in 6 weeks . . .

Easy with those cortisone shots ..... over the long-haul they can cause more damage than you started with, as they can weaken soft tissue.
I've been struggling with IT Band problems for the last 6 weeks or so. It's really ruining my summer as it's keeping me away from my favorite activities, but I just can't make it go away! I've done regular stretching, icing, and have been using a massage ball up and down the IT Band (maybe I need the foam roller?). Anyway, I guess my point is just to do what's necessary to get rid of it before it becomes a chronic issue ......

I went and saw an orthopedic surgeon yesterday. He confirmed it is trochanteric bursitis. He recommended against a cortisone shot. Here's why it happened: my right leg is about 3/8" longer than my left leg. I never knew that. Excessive pronation is also adding to it. He has prescribed orthotics to deal with the pronation and to true up the leg length difference some.
We'll see . . .
