Rally the City to Make Cycling Safer
Tuesday, July 19, 11am to 11:45am
40 Worth Street, between West Broadway and Church, Manhattan
Join Transportation Alternatives, the Century Road Club Association, Five Borough Bicycle Club, Free Wheels, the New York Bicycle Messenger Association, Right Of Way, the Staten Island Bicycle Association and Times Up! in front of the NYC Department of Transportation’s headquarters at 40 Worth Street to show the City of New York that it is time to make cycling safe in New York City.
The rally will precede an 11:30am meeting between representatives from the coalition of above organizations and NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall and NYPD Chief of Transportation Michael Scagnelli. The rally will reinforce and fortify the coalition’s call for the City to make cycling safe.
This year, eleven cyclists have died in crashes, almost a 100% increase compared to last year, when six cyclists died during this time.
At the meeting, the coalition will present a Bike Safety Action Plan to the City and ask that it commit to study cyclist deaths, create more streets with safe space for cycling and heighten enforcement of drivers who endanger cyclists.
Please join this show of solidarity, determination and power for safer biking.
If you can, please bring flowers, candles or a commemorative sign. The rally itself will be solemn, more in the spirit of a vigil than a conventional demonstration.
