General Cycling Discussion - Adonis in Spandex (an observation)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This morning at the Stop-N-Rob as I sat sipping coffee a group of bicyclists stopped. They were resplendent in Warp Five helmets and Spandex. I asked Adonis, the natural leader of the pack, if he had used airfree tires of polyurethane foam that have no air tube. He turned, somewhat surprised that I had dared to address him, saw that I am only an old peasant in denim, and deigned to reply. Noblesse oblige, you know. He, from the massif of the great knowledge with which he was born, declaimed with absolute certitude, " You don't want those. They are heavy. You want an air tube. They ride better." I told him that I have used them for eight months and find them satisfactory. He shook his lordly head in annoyance, and dismissed me by turning to address one of his splendid friends.

I am properly chastened.

I, too, wish the airless tyres thing could be given an extended rest.

If you already use airless tubes and like them, why are you going up to complete strangers and goading them into arguments?

What about tubeless, anyone ride on those?

Airless tyres probably make sense for kids' mountain bikes, beater/commuter bikes, or casual cyclists' cruiser/hybrid/comfort bikes. I am sure they have improved considerably over the past 30 years, but they are not ready for prime time on serious riders' machines, although I certainly wish they were!

Vlad,

You really should go easy on the young folk.

You might have well have asked virgins which condoms they preferred.

Your supercilious post will not spur any vitriolic response from me; even though asinine it may seem, your post reveals much about where you store your hot air.

Vlad, I think you get the idea that you're the only one that's interested in airless tyres.

If we're missing out on the best thing since sliced bread then that's our problem.

I am so glad you've found something that works well for you and I thank you for letting us know about it. But in reality, most of us have no desire to use airless tyres and repeatedly trying to sell the idea to us will do more harm than good.

We know where you stand on the subject. You know where most of us stand. Let's agree to disagree and just discuss all the good things about cycling.

It's great having you as part of the forums and I'm sure most of us enjoy your posts when they're not about tyres.

As funny as this picture is, it kind of makes me feel a bit sad for that little girl, unless it's not really a school picture. Poor kid :( .

Who cares about airless tyres!

I gave up using tyres years ago. I just ride on the rims, flats are no longer a problem. The rims do make a bit of noise, but they aren't too bad as long I avoid corners. Braking can also be a problem, so can sprinting. It all looks very cool at night when I hit the brakes and sparks start flying everywhere.:roflmao:

Actually, when I saw the thread heading I thought you were referring to me.:D

It must be Friday.

CHEERS.

I had never thought of trying that. I imagine it gives a fairly solid ride. Does it help in being able to feel the contours of the road surface a lot better?

I can feel every bump in the road now. It also makes climbing more efficient as there are no tyres to sap energy from my brutal climbing abilities.:D

If a guy in denim in front of a Stop-N Rob sipping coffee asked me about airless road tires I think I'd mace him.

I sense there's some history here.

Vlad, don't tease these guys.
