I'm about to buy a second hand, hardly used 1998 Klein Quantum Race which has 'Matrix' wheels. The 2001 Klein is fitted with Rolf Vector Pro, well known to be a good wheel.

I've searched the web to see if the matrix were the standard wheel in 1998 but can't find any relevant information.

Does anybody out there know about matrix wheels & how they rate...

At one time (maybe still, I dunno) Matrix was the Trek "house brand" wheel. I.e. if you didn't get a name brand wheel, like Rolf, your Trek came with Matrix. I didn't know they were available on any other bikes. Then again, maybe Trek bought Klein a couple of years ago, which would explain it. Anyhow, the Matrix wheels I've seen are adequate, general purpose wheels.
