I was out riding yesterday evening when I passed a group of kids. They were maybe 10-12 years old. Anyway as I passed one of them said "Nice Helmet" This got me to wondering if helmet laws for kids are having a desired effect. Many kids nowdays grow up wearing helmets on their bikes where as when I was a kid I'd never even seen one. Maybe this will breed a new generation who accept helmets as part of the ride.

Of course, he could have just been a smarta$$!!! :)

I think some of todays pop culture icons are having an positive effect on kids wearing helmets. Guys like Tony Hawk or David Mira are never seen on a skateboard or bike without one. They are also vocal activists when it comes to wearing a helmet.

Parents nowdays, to a certain extent, are more likely to insist that their kids put on a helmet. I know my parents never said the first word about it.

I think it's funny when I see a family riding and all the kids have helmets but the adult's don't.

I grew up wearing a helmet, it saved my life when I was 11 and flew over the handlebars headfirst into a wrought iron gate. I have NEVER ridden without one-that memory is still vivid.

I think it's sad. Most of the time the kids aren't even wearing the things correctly.

I try to wear mine whenever I step on the bike, and I let myself be seen carrying it to class and such. I want people to see me wearing it on the bike, so that they know that its ok to wear one. If more people wear them, less people will think its dorky.

I think skateboarding and similar activites have quickly taught kids that helmets are useful and are part of the look.

But I do think this particular kid was being smart.

I believe there is too little information to make a determination as as to the kids motivation to make the comment. However, the kid did make the connection between an adult cyclist and a helmet. That is positive reinforcement.

Negative reinforcement I suppose if you are a helmet hateer.
