Folding Bikes - Is this worth the money? And folding bike suggestions....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Although I wasn't set out looking for a folding bike, I was shopping around on craigslist, and I ran into this offer..

MY FATHER WORKED FOR BMW AND WON THE BIKE THROUGH AN INCENTIVES PROGRAM HE GAVE IT TO ME I RODE IT ONCE BUT IT WAS TO SMALL BEEN SITTING AROUND AND NOW I REALLY NEED THE CASH SO IT UP FOR GRABS 350 IS WHAT I AM ASKING FOR IT. AND AT THAT PRICE IS A STEAL FRONT SHOCKS BLACK FRAME 21 SPEED BEAUTY

In any case... I'm going to try to talk them down from the $350, seems like an awful lot...

but it fits my pre-reqs for wanting a bike. If it truly can fold up, I won't have to buy a roof rack, and I'll be able to ride comfortably to school with a 1-2 mile commute from my apartment in the mornings.

How can I tell if this bike is worth the money? If it's simply a BMW bike, then it would not include brand names or model names or whatever right?

In any case, I would prefer a foldable frame bike to better store in my trunk when I go home from Los Angeles to San diego on weekends... and help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Get photos (good ones) and post them here. We'll have a better chance of giving you an idea of what it is. What makes you think it's a folding bike? There's no mention of it in the original quoted message...

Oh, and it was in his original original post. This was a message that he sent to me later on after I inquired on it. In any case, I don't have pictures, as I will be meeting up with him in person... but he did send me some more info:

my father got the bike via an incentives award that he recieved while working for bmw back in 1998. the bike is the same model that someone would get if they bought a new 3 series that year with the optional sport/bike rack package that was offererd for the first time ever that yeaR.
IT is a chromealloy frame not super light but not way heavey with rst front shock forks. it has if i remeber correctly ashomo or something like that braking system the gear shifter is on the handlebars incorperated with thin the grips it has a gellette seat and really the bike is in mint perfect is brand new condition.this bike at first was unavailable to the public . it was only given to people who had bought a new 3 series with the action package which included a fancy bike rack for your car. its est price of sale in 1998 was about 900-1000

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for the input thus far.

Is that close to what you were thinking brakemeister?

Well this is what one of my friends was able to dig up. I think it's the same bike, the descriptions sound about the same. Minus the yellow paint. Now I'm concerned, however, the auction is still 6 days shy from ending, so the price might possibly go up.

I hope this guy isn't trying to rip me off.

ok NOT the one I am thinking of .....
A new Dahon Jack is under 400 bucks and an expresso is under 350 .. thats NEW
I hate to say but would not buy the above bike.... Maybe 75 bucks ????
That sticker is the only thing which has remotely anything to do with BMW ...

This one BELOW ... I would buy for 350

That's a very sad looking bike for a folder. You can do better.

Yeah. That guy needs to take the $350 he'll get for his dad's bike and hire himself a writing tutor. I mean, good grief!

Oh, and Im with brakemeister. I'd pass on the bike too. You can get a decent new folder for that money, and it won't have seven-year-old folding tech.

Haha, unfortunatley, I have yet to see the actual bike, so I am unsure if that is what it looks like. From what you guys are saying and such however.. I think I'm going to end up passing up on this. He said to me that the bike is black, and has BMW in white letters.

*The ebay bike is not the exact bike*, but I think it's basicalyl the same thing I'm assuming.

-Should I even take my time out to see this thing?
