General Cycling Discussion - A night with B.O.B.

Yesterday I took out my B.O.B. trailer out for our first over nighter. I rode about 10 miles road first, then a 3000 foot six mile off road climb to the top of a local hill, Mica Peak. The ride was great - keep the pedals turning and anything I could get the bike over, it followed. Once on top a buddy and I set up camp, cooked a little dinner, popped a couple brewskies (another reason to have a B.O.B.) and enjoyed a incredible veiw and sunset. We even watched a local firework display. This morning, after a very humble breakfast of Hostess doughnuts and peanut M&Ms, we desended back to Liberty Lake - the off road worthyness of the B.O.B. is great - a little more breaking is required, but other that that it was a blast to bounce (literally) it down the hill.

yeah, i've been REALLY impressed with the off-road capabilities of the BOB. I've used mine for a few road tours and for a few overnight camping trips something like what you described.

although going uphill is MUCH harder if you have much weight in the trailer, it rides great uphill and downhill -- on a weekend camping trip last summer in the Alps with Tent and stove and all my 40+lbs or so of gear i passed some other cyclists on an uphill when they were walking (felt good there) and then later on a descent with some small drops from erosion barriers i flew past some other cyclists with the trailer in tow!

enjoy the BOB, although sounds like your diet of beer and sweets isn't helping your cycling much... or maybe you cycle so you CAN eat poorly without being too unhealthy??

What do you mean - beer and sweets not helping - I eat that stuff just to slow me down - without it I'd be much, much too fast.

Has anyone seen any good deals on trailers recently?

Just beware of one thing on the B.O.B., the skewer. My first one got bent after only 400 miles on flat ground and now my second one looks like its bent too. They aren't cheap either. about 25-30 bucks.

Some odd factoids about the B.O.B.:

A heavily loaded down B.O.B. is the quickest way to test whether or not your rear wheel is in true. (Source: Personal experience of toting a full Thanksgiving grocery run home on my bob after having my bike's rear wheel get toasted by a parallel sewer grate.)

If you encounter a drunk cyclist named Bob, he might be impressed to find out that your trailer is named after him. (Source: a drunk cyclist named Bob.)

If you have a Bob, always lock up your rear wheel, even when the bob isn't with you. if your rear wheel is stolen, your bob skewer is gone also.Replacement skewers can take a long time to arrive when special ordered through a bike shop. (Source: Friend, not named Bob, who had their rear wheel stolen.)

I'm taken it (B.O.B.) camping again this weekend, but this time I'll be it towing with my tandem, and the stoker is my son. (who's name is also Bob)
