Well while I'm not a commuter in the real sense, I'm getting back into cycling.
The bike is an old Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2 with a blackburn rack and bag
and a front handlebar bag.

I live 16 miles from work, country two thirds of the way and city the last bit.
Fairly flat terrain, which right now I can make it in about 45 minutes, by car
it's about 25/35 minutes pending lights.

But the early morning gets very foggy here and also usually quite cold too.

SO, my compromise was to keep my bike at work, and at lunch time run my
errands on the bike, taking varying routes through town, side streets with
little or no traffic, which I can usually do within 45 minutes including my stops
at the places I need to go, post office, dvd rental store, bank and others.

To me it's great, middle of the day, out of the office, zipping around town as
fast as I can, still get tired as I push myself to ride harder each day and finding
different routes is also interesting as well.

Thought I'd share that in case those that live too far away, can take their bike
to work, and ride during lunch, I have an hour which is flexible as I usually spend
late nights there anyways so if I take a particular long run one day and get back
after 1, it's not a big deal, also I have my desk phone roll over to my work's mobile
so it's like I took my desk with me. You should hear the customers when I tell them
I am along a street on my bike at lunch time, :)

Longest route so far taken was 10.4 miles, usually it is around 7 miles and in this
heat lately, it's a HOT 7 miles, feels great ;)

Still doing the lunch errand trip, now the mileage is at or above 10 miles to cover
in less than an hour with stops along the way, so between the stops have to
kick it up a notch to get back in time. So much better than last year when all
it did was rain the whole summer, at least the rain holds off until after lunch!
