View Full Version : Create Your Own Bike Lane

Does anyone know where to buy the template of the man on his bicycle (representing a bike lane) when painting the street? I know every street is in fact a bike lane but the motorist don't seem to understand this (I got honked again) and I'm thinking of getting a can of paint from Home Depot and using this design to paint several of these on the street. I wonder if there's a paint that will wear off with rain? I know it's illegal but a few won't hurt anyone and it's more effective than those "Share the Road" signs which cost 100K to post 20 of them.
All the red tape and cost of building a bike lane is insane and this just seems like an easy solution. After several weeks, the paint will be gone but the local motorist will have a better respect for cyclist. Is this just a stupid idea or am I just getting old? ;-)

That would be vandalism.
If you are hell-bent on it, try using chalk or flour.

Just smile and wave thank you to anyone who honks at you. They'll get used to it and stop honking sooner than you think.

You're right... It would be vandalism.
I remember seeing someone printing signs on the sidewalk with a machine attached to a bicycle. The material could be washed off with water (it could have been chalk) but I don't remember. Anyway.. It was just a thought.

Who cares if it's vandalism? Steve wants to engage in a little cycling disobedience to further biker visibility.
I think I've seen them in commercial safety product catalogs, the kind of place that sells hazmat placards, traffic control markers and industrial first aid stuff.
I have a feeling the city will come out and paint over them PDQ, but I think it's a great guerilla action to take- Ride on!

Water based paint will wash away.

I don't remember all the particulars, but I seem to recall some sort of paint spray system rigged to bikes that worked like an ink jet printer... Some tech heads did it for the Republican rally in NYC. Sort of like sky writing airplanes, but on bikes. They could blast a message onto the road while riding.

There is still the demo video up. ;)
Make your own stencil. Or just paint it freehand - two circles, two triangles, and three straight lines. You can get pretty good with a little practice. Use surveyors spray paint, available from any surveyors' or engineering supply. The paint cans are designed to work upside down.

Make your own stencil.
Some other inspiration, just cause I think they are cool stencils. Not actually encouraging such behavior.
