Cunego was diagnosed with Mono after his poor showing at the Giro.

I know Cunego was not recovered from his bout of Mono he picked up at the tail end of the Giro. Simeoni or Simoni? I think Simoni just targeted the Giro this year and passed on the TdF. Don't know about Simeoni. Maybe he knew Lance would chase him down wherever he went.
f
Cunego had Mono which is why he sucked at the Giro.
and I dont know if you mean Simoni or Simeoni.

Simeoni is riding that race in China, the Tour of Quingi Lakes or whatever it's called.
He's on a small Italian team this year

I think I meant SIMONI. He and and Cunego are in the same team.

I have no doubt Cunego was ill this Spring. Most riders in the peloton suffer in the Spring with colds, flu, and other illnesses brought on by riding in bad weather, while still not in their best physical condtion.
But, come July, the Pros who are serious contenders in the Tour de France saddle up and ride. So, pardon me if I suspect that "mono" is an Italian word for "Not tough enough to be a real GC contender in the Tour de France".
Of course, Cunego's fans will be outraged at any suspicion he might be using his bout with mono as an excuse to dodge the Tour. Who ever heard of a "one day wonder" dodging the Tour de France. Truly an outrageous notion. Sure.
So, I look forward to July 2006. What excuses will Cunego and his fans come up with next year? And, the year after that, and after that? Will "lack of a spine" ever appear among the list of reasons Cunego will retire without ever winning the Tour de France?

Alan, your ignorance is astounding.
Ever had mono? It takes you out for quite a while.
He is the future of the TDF and will finish in the top 3 as soon as he fully develops as a rider.

That "one day wonder" finished last year as the #1 rider in the world. Alan though doesn't following cycling and thus would not know that.

Yes. He was an amazing "one day wonder". He won an endless series of one day races. Plus, he entered stuff like the "Tour de Singapore" and the "Tour de Beijing" that most riders did not know even existed. Really piled up the 'ol points as "Number One" in races Lance didn't know existed. You don't get to be "Number One" by winning a single "Second Tier" race such as the Giro. You must add to that win after win in races most riders didn't bother to enter.
But, the "Number One" rider in the world did not challenge Lance in the 2004 Tour de France. And then, he dodged the Tour de France in 2005. He never saw a tough race he could not hide from. The "Tour de France" is the "big leagues" of pro cycling. And, Cunego is the "King" of little league riding.
His career path seems modeled on that of Cippollini. Every year, Cippollini would pile up stage win after stage win. But, when the peloton reached Paris, Cippollini had already been at a beach in Spain for a week. Bragging about all of his stage wins. And, each year, inventing a new reason he quit before Paris.
Tell you what. If Cunego wins the Tour de France next year, I'll mail you twenty bucks. If Cunego does not win, you mail me ten bucks.
Of course, this is a sure thing for you. Just put your money where your mouth is...on the rear end of the "Number One" rider in the world.
Somebody please ban this idiot.

The TDF is not the be all and end all of cycling. It's not even the best race of the year. All that matters to ignorant fools like you though is the TDF. If you don't do well in France in July well then you're just a one day wonder.
You're really a sad person, Alan.

Why isn't this guy banned yet?
Mods???
Alan,
What you say, and claim to know about the sport is absolutely absurd.
Lets get some facts:
1. Mono is a real Sickness.
2. It reallllly messes up your system
Second, to call the Giro a second tier race is pathetic and really shows how much you know about cycling.
Lance didn’t know these other races existed because he only does one race the entire year with the thought of winning. While other riders, possibly the true champions and characters of the sport race all year, all around the globe. If anything the fact that lance doesn’t do any races post-July is more of a knock on him than anyone
For Cunego to challenge lance at the 2004 tour after he completely dominated the giro would have been suicide. It is virtually impossible to do well at both, something LANCE probably could not even do.
As for 2005, well he was sick. I really don’t think he or any of the other contenders are “afraid” of lance so they don’t come to the tour. If anything they want all the cracks at him they can get before he retires.
ABH is a xenophobic cave-dweller with the IQ of a dry-roasted peanut. I think he's good fun to laugh at ... but that's just me :D

Bad weather has nothing to do with getting viruses. I'm always surprised at how many people riders come into contact with while at the tour , notice that some do not shake hands.
Mono at Cunego's age could take 6 months to recover.

Giro d'Italia a "second tier race"? Seriously? It's the second most prestigious stage race in the world. Is it the Tour? No, but what is?
And the term "one day wonder" usually means that someone had one great race once in their career, and could never repeat that performance, much like "one hit wonder". Being a strong classics (one day event) rider shouldn't be confused with "one day wonder". If that's the case, then Tom Boonen, George Hincapie, pre-cancer Lance Armstrong (just recent examples that come to mind) are "one day wonder's" too. In fact, by your definition, Lance Armstrong is the only real rider racing tonight.
google mononucleosis. i've never had it but some of my friends have and they were pretty much down for the count. it makes you real tired and weak.
Infectious mononucleosis, caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus. It's like a bad cold when very young, but older than teen years can cause a lot of cellular damage, inflammed lymph nodes and fatigue. The good news is that immunity is for life, so it only happens once, but if you don't get it as a kid, it can be very nasty, and fatal to the elderly.

Bad weather has nothing to do with getting viruses.
Wouldn't riding at high level in bad weather for hours each day increase a person's chance of falling victim of one? Due to a weakened immune system not being able to quickly fight it off.
This has been tested, no influence of weather, termperature etc. on getting a virus, it just has to do with person-person contact. If you see a new virus you've never had before, you will get sick, regardless of health.
What happens is that in the spring, riders gather from all over the world and bring those viruses with them- then you get sick riders. Same effect at Universities in september, by the 3-4th week, everyone has a cold, even though the weather is nice.

Yes there is. For example, people are more likely to get colds in the cold winter because their sinuses become drier and more prone to infection.

In the 1950's, the Giro attacted fields of riders that were as strong as the fields entering the Tour de France. But, decade by decade, the gap in the quality of competion of the two races has grown wider. Sorry that the facts are painful. But, it is a fact that in recent years, the Giro has become a "second tier" race.
The very best Italian stage riders enter, and the very strongest stage race cyclists from other nations have been staying away in droves. In recent years, the winner of the Giro is usually an Italian. It is expected that an Italian will win. In sharp contast, it has been two decades since a Frenchman won the Tour de France. One is becoming a "home boys" race. The other is a race among the world's best riders.
When Pantani won the Tour de France in 1998, he was the first Italian to win in 33 years. Every Italian rider who won the Giro between 1966 and 2005 failed to win the Tour de France...EXCEPT for Pantani. Most of the Italian "winners" of the Giro were simply not strong enough to win the Tour de France.
Plain fact: Among the astoundingly gifted athletes of the Pro peloton, only 16 have won the Tour de France over the past thirty-five years. And just one was Italian. Sorry. Facts are facts.
In 2005, the Giro was won by a fella who is just a "worker bee" when riding in the Tour de France. That is indicative about the huge gap in the quality of riders in the Tour de France versus the Giro. Another clue is to look at the riders who finished in the "Top Ten" at the Giro in 2005. Basso is the ONLY Italian rider who rode well in the Giro who ranks in the "Top Ten" at the Tour de France this year. Not a SINGLE rider who finished in the "Top Ten" at the 2005 Giro is currently among the "Top Twenty" in the GC of the 2005 Tour de France.
And, the organizers of the Giro have admitted they are concerned about the urgent need to bring stronger riders to the Giro. Move it to an earlier date...cut some stages...create a larger time gap between the end of the Giro and the beginning of the Tour de France. But, those ideas may be too little, too late.

I'm struggling to find any facts here.
Cunego is just starting back. He will be in the Brixia Tour, starting today.
So will Simoni.
