Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Turn, Shake, & Rattle

The other night pulling my seatpost I noticed that yes! we have rust.
I then flipped the frame over and could hear what sounded like one
of those brazillian rain sticks they used to sell at The Nature Company.

Awesome, as this gives me an excuse to dream yet another new bike
but I was curious how long all of you have had your frames.

I had my old Univega for almost 3 years before the crash
and my pista is now getting to the 2 year mark.

Jeff - framesaver is your friend. Marcus has some, so does Rapid Transit.

Yes I was going to stop by Rapid Transit to see what's up.
Oh and yeah this is my Pista, my univega died a painful death

use it on your next frame Jeff (think "my new Thylacine frame should get treated") as the frame saver is not meant for already rusting frames unless you can get in there with some steel wool and a coat hanger and clean it out, spray it with a little WD40, dry wipe it (coat hanger and old t-shirt), and then give it a coat of Frame Saver. Without the cleaning process, ou are just sealing the rust in. Best to remove to prevent any further outbreaks.

I saw a steel wool wire brush once, not sure if it comes long enough but that might help/speed things up instead of trying to DIY the coat hanger/steel wool.

echoing the "don't use framesaver if there's already rust" sentiment -- just like 165 said, it'll just seal existing rust unless you can remove it.

DEFINITELY frame save your thylacine in case W hasn't already done it for you. The s&S couplings are one more place for water to get in. also, make sure you grease the threads on those couplings -- that will serve to keep out some of the water, and make it easier to take apart. But you probably already knew that. Enjoy ragbrai -- I'll be there next year.

Spray WD-40 into all the frame tubes. The stays can be accessed through the little holes near the dropouts.
I have a 30 year old cheap steel frame that is used exclusevely for winter riding (on salted roads) I never wash the frame and I have had no rust related issues yet.
