June 1956 I rode my 5 speed turenrad from Bingen/Rhein to Amsterdam, and return. All the fellows full of Christmas cheer who thought the trip a splendid idea were not available. I went alone.
As I pedalled through small villages I saw statues of an infantry soldier with the caption "Nicht vergessen unser lieben"
Many older people searched my face as I rode along. I finally realized that they were looking for their lost sons.
May it please whatever gods there be that we will never search the faces of strangers hoping to find our lost children.
