Does anybody have an innovative way that they hoist their bike up to work on it? I have put ours into 2 Park Tools bike stands placed side-by-side before that worked out very nice but the downside to that was...the stands were not mine! :( I'm looking to do something inexpensively...Thanks for any thoughts

We use the Ultimate workstand; works fine
Inexpensive? Use a couple of those hard black rubber bungee cords and suspend tandem from rafters/bike hooks; use old inner tubes to stabilize it from swaying to and fro . . . attach one tube to front and one to rear of tandem. Not the best, but do-able.

This will be a rehash of an old thread. Supergo has several models of the Ultimate on sale, plus $20 off (Simply use coupon code: 8225776 at Step 3 of checkout. This offer is only good on the website or over phones – not valid at retail stores. Expires 7/24/05 ) and Jenson has the lowest priced one with free freight. I'm not sure which one I have, but it's red and came with a carry case. Ultimate seems to be the standard for tandem owners.

Do you have Wood Beams on the celling???
if you don't do you mind having some hucks sticking Out???
will your landlord kill you if you do!?

anyway this tecnic is being use forever in III world countrys and i need to say sometimes is far more effective that your typical "work stand"

basically you want to construct a "Triangular" (say hi to mister B.M.Fuller) tension structure ussing the frame as the "Hub of the Loads,,
you will need 3 stachment points 2 on the celling(coming downwards) and one on the floor going Upwards,,the rest is super simple but you can make it as complicated as you want to,, just to make it easyer to undertand just use "garden variaty rope"

the first thing to do is to place the upper hucks at about 10feet apart(for a tandem)the idea is to generate two +/-45deggre "holders" (ropes on tension) you can attach them in whatever way you want and to pretty much any place you desire for example the stem and the seat post, and it can get as fancy as it get,,leather, Velvet, gel pads, whatever,,,
by now the bike will be hanging and since the ropes are on a abrupt angle they will have much less of a pendulum affect like if they were just hanging down
the best trick of all of them (My contribution i believe) is to have a 3 strap comming from the floor that way all the slack is gone and you can make the bike as stable as you want to..

I change Bottom brackets, work on brakes, gears,,,etc with out any critical short comings

Oh I also see this sistem in use in Amsterdam were the space is at a premiun and you see reapair shops the size on a one car garage with 3 guys working on bikes and 20 bikes hanging rom the raftors.

also you can make a temporary "stand" in the middle of the road ussing a tree, your belt(who rides bikes with belts!?!?) straps, inner tubes,,whatever .will not a be as stable but for sure is far better than lifting the bike with one hand and adjusting the derreileur with the other one.

I hope this helps,,,just remenber triangles are beautyful

I just toss it on the hitch mounted bike rack on my truck. Works great!

We've got one of the two legged kickstands that lifts the back wheel. This really is all I've needed for most any work on the bike. The stand even clears the pedals so it's handy while doing drivetrain work. When it isn't adequate I flip the whole bike over onto the handlebars.
