I have about 7-8 solid days to tour and need to get out of the city (Chicago).
I need some recommendations. I will be self supported and would be willing to drive
to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan (or any other place) to get out of the city to start riding.
I have thought about the UP of Michigan and also North Central Minnesota, the Paul Bunyan Trail but have
not found anything convincing thus far.
Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Adventure Cycling route network (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/network.cfm). I ordered their maps and am making an improvised loop from where I live. Good luck and have fun!

Think about a prtial around lake Michigan. Ride to Manitowoc, take the ferry to Ludington, MI, and back around. I think I would work on getting picked up in Northern Indiana rather than ride through Gary, etc.
