Can anyone tell me if a Dawes Fireball is A: Worth keeping and B: worth spending £300 on a groupset and making into a nice bike? I was thinking of buying a road bike an the other day was putting something in the shed and noticed my dads Dawes Fireball. He got it off my mum for there 5th anniversary they think... making it roughly 30yrs old. I just though it would be nice to use something like that (keep it in the family an all that) than just buy a new bike. However if its just a crap bike then i won't bother. The frame isn't in too bad condition just a few light scratches. I can't find anything on the net about it.
Cheers for looking, Sam.

If nothing else but for to preserve what has to be one of the coolest names in all of bikedom. Preserve that Fireball. But I dunno nothin' 'bout it. What is the groupset that is currently on 'er? Can you post a picture? It may very well be worth a restoration, as Dawes didn't make many lamo bikes.

My advice - clean it up and ride it! Shimano 600 is as good or better than most of what's available today. No need to replace any of it. The only thing that anyone might consider a drawback is the downtube non-indexed shifters. They are not difficult to get used to and are a small price to pay for riding a 20 year old original classic!

It sounds a bit stupid but i really want to get some of those flashy Brake/Gear levers. It needs a new left crank and the pedals are a bit rough looking. The wheels are slightly buckled and the tyres are all cracked. What would be a relatively cheap but good upgrade for the brakes as they're rubish. Also, is it a touring bike? I really am new to all this!

Sounds like the Shimano Arabesque series. Very attractive.

Only good bikes had Shimano 600 groupos.

Buy some pedals and a new crank if needed. True the wheels. Put new cables on it. New tires. Grease the bearings and oil the chain. Then you'll have a bike as good as most you'll find in bike shops today.
